Just get a little electric for starters, with a few small bags of beans to try. You can get the beans at any grocery store that sells fresh ground by weight.

I have to get DH another grinder this year. I used his for grinding spices, cleaning it with bread worked until I did the hot peppers LOL
Try grinding several batches of rice, to see if that cleans it up.

I have one of these. Works well.

Something else that would be good to include as a part of his gift is a French Press. This is one example. http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/prod...1&SKU=16301809 There are many other versions with higher and lower prices.

Bed & Bath has 20% off coupons. Get on their mailing list, if you have one close by. Haven't checked their web site to see if they have a similar promotion on it.

She's right, temperature is all important. Good quality ground coffee left in jar cold water in refrigerator overnight will give highest quality taste. Cheapo crappo coffee done this way just give resultant liquid that tastes like used coffee grounds. This method also uses more coffee grounds, not quite as efficient as hot water extraction, but you will get the absolute best tasting coffee possible out of your coffee grounds.

However if using hot water extraction to get more coffee from your grounds, what I have found that works best is get a small stainless sauce pan and put water and coffee grounds in it. Just before it comes to a boil (you will see bubbles around edge of pan, but no boiling (dont want to boil your coffee), remove it from the heat source and pour it through a filter placed in a large funnel. Or if you find an old non-electric dripolator can actually use bottom part to heat the coffee and the top part to filter the coffee. If you watch on ebay the old stainless revereware dripolators come up for bid occasionally and tend to go fairly reasonable. Probably stick to stainless though there were lot old aluminum dripolators and they will work fine though coffee is acidic so depends if you worry about cooking in aluminum.....
