Use the ignore button it comes in handy. Just take the good advice that some give you and ignore the others.

Doesn't seem to me that you are working it out when you change your phone to a private number just so you don't have to speak to bill collectors.
They want their money just as you would if you lent money to someone with an agreement of it being paid back.
And if a person had signed up for the Disability insurance coverage that is only based on the balance and is not a running monthly charge. The bill would then be paid (minimum balance due) each and every month. And at least for 12 months this payment is made as long as a person is laid up.
Good thing to have done in cases like the one above, then none of this would be an issue now.
And if a person goes completely on disability, the balance is paid off~!
That is also part of that insurance program provided by the CC Companies..

If I could instill one thing in our young people it would be to never ever get a credit card. Thank the Lord I have all of mine paid off but when my DH was lying in a hospital bed near death with a brain abcess, things were surely hard and I had to put up with those calls. I agree about paying them off and never using them again. I am learning to live without them and it can be hard but very worth it. I read on Yahoo last night they are going to charge a fee if you don't use your card or if you pay it off every month. You can't win with these credit card companies.

Chase sucks canal water! I had my major credit card w/ Providian who was purchased by WaMu. Chase took over WaMu. My balance was around 80% of the allowed amount. The sent me a letter saying that they had reviewed my account and using info from one of the "credit reporting agencies" they cited somewhat bogus bullet points and canceled my card. One of the reasons was not having enough credit [I only had two cards], another high balances [I was just finishing 8 years of continous college tuition payments] and I had reciently become un-employed so I wasn't able to utilise the $1,500.00 a month I had been spending on tuition to pay them down.

Now they expect to make interest on my while I pay them off...

The bottom of the letter said 001WaMuClosure...nice guys.

kellyandroger, I've been where you are. 3 credit cards and all of them unpaid for a couple months due to me being hospitalized. But that was years ago before they hit you with all kinds of hiked interest rates, penalties, and late fees. Upon all of which you get charged interest. An unlisted, unpublished number helps only for a short time. Hopefully long enough for you to get the bill paid. Talking or even writing to the companies doesn't work, IME. I am glad you are up and around again.

ak, a lot of the technicalities in the insurance program can keep them from paying. Pre-existing conditions, the primary card holder, income levels, how much paperwork your doctor is willing to fill out, and waiting periods. One ins plan we looked at had a 90 day waiting period and would pay ONLY if you were not late with any payments within the past 6 months.

We had something smiliar with Chase. Out of stupidity, we forgot to make the payment. It was for a total of about $14.79 but when we realized that it was late, we tried to pay it on line but they wanted $$$$ which was more than what was owed. Anyway, I bit the bullet and sent it priority mail. Got rid of Chase and got a better deal with the credit union. The entire time that we was trying to get this paid, I am guessing we got 12 phone calls in 3 days.......never been late except this one time. Now I keep a zero balance on all cards and wont use them unless it is an emergency.

KellyandRoger.....best of luck, I have felt your pain and understand.

IMHO The bank/credit card company agree to make an UNSECURED loan. They took the risk and they should abide by the written contract/agreement. I would image they didn't include a "We are going to call you everyday and belittle you until you pay in full." cause in the contract. If they are not happy about non payment close the account and take legal action. Or would that be bad for the image???

Since Kelly recently had a heart attack, I would think that all of those telephone calls could cause an additional strain on her heart. Changing the phone number may be the wisest thing (for her health)that she could do until she goes back to work and is able to pay them. She has already communicated the medical emergency to Chase and the bank refuses to back off, though she has told them when to expect payment. At this point, the daily phone calls serve no purpose other than to harass her and her family. I would definitely send them a letter telling them to cease and desist calling her and to make all communication in letter form.

Chase told me they would do that when we lived in Louisiana (right after a hurricane) every month I got the bill they conveniently 'forgot' the agreement and declared me behind. Then I would call and we would start the same thing over and over again.
Soon as you can - dump them.

Please don't let this prevent you from getting some good advice. I'm sorry to hear you were sick. Did you know that most folks filing for bankruptcy have had an unexpected illness? That should be a wakeup call for ALL of us.

Let me stress again, please tell us what you are working with (renting/no savings, children, disability, ability to garden, etc....) We can and will help you. Many of the folks who post there have already, or are going through what you are going through! Some of the most ingenious ideas come from people who must absolutely do the most extreme things in order to survive!

Here is our tightwad tips thread for this month:

Notes to self: Self:

Nov. 1: Write the check and take it out of the checkbook balance before any other bill.... Mail it as soon as the paycheck hits the bank account, so Chase will quit CHASE--ing me (Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk)

Nov. 15: Set up my "cookie jar" stash so that I will have something to fall back on, if there ever is a next time

Nov.15: Close the Chase account

Nov. 16: Check out a local credit union--set up an appointment to talk to a representative about membership, loans, credit cards, personal bank account

Nov. 17: Find out how to access annualcreditreport.com to get started on a thrice yearly readout of my credit report that will show the results of my payment history and ways I could improve

Dec. 1: Make my early New Year's resolution to get started on a new path to getting more independent, not dependent--on my income, food, fuel, water, personal security--and anything else that could threaten my health, savings, and self esteem in the future. After all, that is what this homesteading stuff is all about....

Dec. 25: Wish everybody on HT a Happy Holiday and success for the New Year, but for some of us old curmudgeons that have never made any mistakes or had any problems(and are quite willing to scold anyone else who ever did), not quite so happy or successful. Anyone who hasn't stepped into a cow pie hasn't really walked in the pasture.........

I'm going through a messy divorce and not only did I need to deal with my creditors, but also the soon-to-be-ex's who had my phone number as their contact information. I found out that they will put you on auto-dial until the phone is answered by a real person--at which point, you won't get called again until the next day. Yes, it's a hassle to say the same thing over and over again each day, but really, it's not the end of the world. My mortgage company is still messed up, but each time they call, I tell them "go ahead and pull up my account" at which point they agree that I'm current and apologize for the call. When Chase calls you, they should have a payment agreement noted on your file--just tell them to pull your file and look at it while you wait a minute. They might ask you if anything has changed--tell them no, wish them a good day and hang up. The collectors don't have your file pulled up until you get on the phone, so they don't know until they talk to you that you've made an agreement to pay.

Wishing you well with your recovery

Pam
