I agree with Eddie. I don't care if they were hunting in season or out, the jerk who pulled the trigger should be charged with manslaughter, IMO.

Agree totally with you EB. How many times do you hear a noise when hunting and it's not what you're actually hunting? They teach this in basic hunter's courses I would think

And he may. If the prosecuting attorney does his job.

To me, that is a waste of resources. Hey maybe do a BAC test, but it seems relatively obvious how he was killed.
most places require in the event of a unnatural death that a autopsy be performed, it could be possiable he died some other way and the gun shot was being used to cover it ( most likly not ) or perhaps things may not add up to the story given ( like distance and path of entry and exit ) was it a cold blooded execution? till the autopsy is performed you cant rule things like that out. all part of investigating if it was an accident or crime or even the extent of a crime.

Im not big on poachers or stupid people but I feel for this kids parents and family as well as him, common he was just geting started with life, making mistakes is human nature its a horriable thing when they end like this.

True, but I believe it was Hienlien that named stupidity as being the universal capital crime. There is no discrimination involved, male, female, any color, any religion. There are no lawyers, jurys nor judges, and certainly no appeals.

The person who "accidentally" shot my husband intentionally pulled the trigger to shoot at sound. I have no sympathy for poachers and even less for someone who'll shoot at sound.

First off no one here had anything to do with this young mans stupidity..

He chose the path he was walking in more ways then one! He was old enough to know the dangers and the possible outcome.

Now just to set the record straight. I would rather his and his friends stupidity take one of them instead of some innocent person.

When you get missed shots that hit your house then talk to me about poachers. It seems they could care less about others lives, just so they can poach a deer.

Check past threads here on HT and see what I've said before. Thankfully I've only ever had to draw my liscensed conceal weapon 3 times in my life and only had to fire in one of those 3 times, thankfully!

That one time was poachers who came off the road between the barn and the upper garage and were between the house and the barn, pointing towards the house.
Had they had the chance to fire at the deer it would have been straight into my house.. enough of this..

Anyway I'm glad you think it was just a mistake and that you and your family are safe from poachers..

I disagree! If they are starving, then let me know and I will take a deer and butcher it for them to eat. But to poach them with little regard for others lives or livestock is wrong..

They get what they deserve!

Stupid is as stupid does!

Yes,a careless accident. His target flew between him and the fellow he shot, when he pulled the trigger, they were lined up..Much different than shooting in the direction of a sound that may or may not be what you want to shoot.

The sad part is these yahoos endanger, maim and kill innocent bystanders, non-hunters, livestock and dogs. Every year we read reports like this in the newspaper along with the reports of the non-hunters they kill, the draft horses they shoot in the field (must of looked like deer), the farmer who was shot sitting on his tractor ('hunter' later admitted he was having fun sighting on the tractor and 'mistakenly' pulled the trigger.), etc. The punishment needs to be far harsher. Most of these get off with a slap on the wrist. There also needs to be zero tolerance for people who go and hunt on other people's land without permission. The basis is you can't hunt there unless you have permission. There should be no requirement that I have to post my land to stop hunters from coming here. [rant off]

My fiancee hasn't gone deerhunting since he lived in NY...

It seems yuppie-types hunt to make them feel big and bad, and not to provide food or to help control population.

My fiancee was nearly shot in the head because he reached out to move a branch IN A TREE STAND, and some yayhoo fired AT A SOUND, not at a deer in his sites.

I worked with a guy who was color blind. He wore a blaze orange jacket all the time. He said to him, it looked just like yellow, you know, fall leaf color.

Does that make you feel any safer?

Our village store tags deer. One season a "hunter" brought in a fox to be tagged. Thought our Maine deer were a bit small.!! Somebody needs to pay ATTENTION to what they are shooting at!!

rock i agree

rock,,here poachers are also the drug dealers, that draw disabilty and wouldn't work in a pie factory......they shoot horse and cattle and also shoot through folks homes......
a friend was home alone one night with all the lights off, shots started hitting the shed by his house, after ducking he grabbed his 06 and returned fire....a truck left quickly leaving a spotlight.

another night after hollering for poachers to get out of there....he walked down through the meadow and they returned shooting a large rifle,,he was then several hundred yards from his house, with no cover,,he was then in a short gunfight and he didn't know if he hit anything or not,,there was at least three of them.

my son was on are well posted property when three poachers came by him and he ran them back the way they came....they regrouped and tried to go around him and he yelled but they ignored him...so he started counting 1 2 he said they ran for their lives on two, and he didin;t know what would have happend if they hadn't of left.

i remember a story from field+steam like 20some years ago where a landowner went to see what some after dark shooting was and he was killed by some poachers, that didn't want to be caught......
teach your kids not to poach or bother honest folk.......

If anyone knows a kid,or has a young child that shows an interest in hunting, please, take the time and effort to see that they get proper training,I lived in a neighborhood where several young boys wanted to learn to shoot,I agreed to teach them only with their parents concent and the understanding that while they were with me,being taught by me,they belonged to me.one One single mother had two young sons, she bought one a small caliber handgun for christmas,I begged her to let me teach the kid how to use the handgun in a safe manner,,she replied,,oh he knows how to shoot, several weeks later he was showing off with the gun, removed the clip, and pointed it at his younger brother and fired, the brother died the next day,we need to teach gun safety and use common sense,,seems like neither one was used in both situations,,
