My grandma's was larger than 20'x20'. Butchering was done in a converted hog house, pantry was in the basement, freezers were on an enclosed "porch". Back in the days when she was young most houses had a "summer kitchen" where canning and big cooking projects were done. Summer kitchens were not part of the house but a separate building. I don't remember if our summer kitchen had water or not. Grandma used it only to park the car in, and storage for empty canning jars and her old Chambers stove which they kept for parts.

At one time kitchens were really the social center of the family. A parlor was used for company or special events. Remember, no TV or such.

I havent built mine YET waiting to sell current house but
I have already picked mine out and as i dont have a scanner you are gonna have to use your imagination.
E1 who agrees with texican is correct country kitchens cannot be tooo big and they should be open as ken said. my kids and husband are always in the kitchen while i am cooking..... however thinking about this they leave when it's time to do dishes??? hmmm

my new house will be 1800 sq feet 3 bdrm 2 bath butlers pantry kitchen living and dining on all 1 floor.
dining kitchen and living all SEMI open to each other to incorporate the wood heating stove (located in living rm, enabling it to disperse the heat better. the kitchen is 12X25 the length will incorporate a butchers tbl and a kitchen island for prep work. the butlers pantry is on 1 end of the kitchen to the left it is 17X6 (decided NOt to build the covered porch that INDENTED into the house instead will build it OFF the house and it will include an outdoor kitchen with gas stove. and rock fireplace with spit built in
Root celler will be directly UNDER butlers pantry with 2 Openings 1 inthe house and 1 outside
Im very excited and it took a long time to find what worked for us But my kitchen now is 13X15 so i took what was NOT in my current kitchen and what i wanted in my NEXT one and got this. So ask yourself what will work for you? if your like this plan it is in country farmhouse plans you can pick it up at amazon.

Texican, your dream kitchen sounds like heaven on earth! I also got some great ideas from NCLee. My kitchen/diningroom is a 12x20 and wwwaaayyy too small!! No walk in pantry

One of my sisters is fond of saying, "If you're gonna dream, dream BIG". My new house has most of the exterior footers poured... waiting on a big paycheck, and some time, to get the floor poured. (When time, money, backbone, and weather all come together, I'll have the major stumbling block out of the way... I can build everything except the SLAB!) So I know what the floor plan is going to look like.

Most of the farm kitchens I've visited were small utilitarian affairs... the lady of the house had to be a master juggler to keep it all from going to heck.
