Probably about 50 more acres than we need.

We have 6 ac. Completely fenced and now cross fencing. Hope to have ready for goats by spring. Good creek along back and a great cool water spring on one side. Hope to move on it by summer. Hope, hope, hope!

There is no right way or wrong way. Just your way and my way. And the fun of sharing ways.

We have just under 7 acres. There is about 3.50 acres in open land, and the rest in woods. We planted this year, asparagus, strawberries, comfrey, jerusalem artichokes, currants, blueberries, two plum trees, 1 apple tree( the other is pending for fall.

We moved here only a year ago, and have had the worst gardening that I have experienced in Ohio in years. I could fit my entire yield in a brown paper shopping bag.

We moved about 30 miles south from one county to another and a great micro climate in the city with a fenced yard, to an open new garden. I will have to learn to garden in a totally different climate. So I will be buying grocery stuff this winter.

Dh and I did get our wood cut this year, and I hope it will last for a few months.

But with I am very grateful for this place and hope to slowly become more self-sufficient as the months go on.

about 2 acres...property is expensive. We'd like more, but this is quality land in a nice location and we enjoy it.

We have 30 acres and have no intention of micro managing or mowing most of it. We have a few acres set aside for garden and house (house to built next year). The rest is a buffer and to provide wood for the stove. There is so much wood already down I don't' think we'll ever have to cut a tree.

I don't think it is rude to ask either....not here anyway. Asking "in town" might be thought by some to be rude or too nosy. I see your point about wondering how much is too much land. It is good to include that in your thinking.

We have 40 acres but only "use" about 4 acres of it fully. The rest is a wood lands barrier between us and a new housing area....and some is a barrier between us and a road....and some we use as a wood lot. So, for us, the 40 acres is really necessary or we would not like to stay here. But - others might not care if they are able to see another house or hear the cars on the road.

Having said that however, the 40 acres is way too much to manage if we were trying to micro-manage the whole parcel. (for us anyway - others would be able to manage it just fine) Most of it we just leave alone as wood lands. There is no way for us to "farm" or "garden" or...anything really with the 40 acres. So, some would maybe say we have too much land. But, to re-cap, for us we need the 40 acres to help provide the privacy we needed. Privacy is top on our list of "needs."

Think about what you want, what you need, and what you want to avoid. Then, see what acres/houses you find and ...then do just want you did here: ask more questions to gather the information you need to make a sound decision.

Good luck.
