Boxes, Bricks and Bulk

HJ; the good .22 cal ammo does not come in bulk. All I have ever seen in bulk is the cheaper stuff. I buy Winchester Super-x long rifle because my Ruger likes them. It comes in boxes of fifty, ten boxes to the brick. I have several bricks, plus some bulk ammo (1500 rounds or so) for the single shot squirrel gun. That gun (a little over-under .22/.410) does not particularly care what it eats so long as the range is only thirty yards or so.

I pretty much agree with the fellow who said we will get good ammo at garage sales in a few years. This stocking up for insurrection or civil unrest is a bit far-fetched in my opinion. I reload, and I keep plenty of ammo on hand, but not because I think the world is coming to an end. I just think that it will never get cheaper, and ammo keeps just about forever if not exposed to the weather. My kids will finish shooting up some of the ammo I have now.

As I posted on a CCW site that I frequent - I guess that I was a trend setter, by being a "Gun Happy Marine" for almost 3 decades now.... Can you say "stockpiles of ammunition??" I have lots of ammo for my needed calibers, even in those metal encased sealed military-surplus 'spam cans'.. They include 9mm parabellum, .30-06 Springfield, 7.62X25mm Tokarev, 7.62X54mm Russian, and other calibers that WW probally didn't even carry before the rush to buy firearms and ammunition after the last election..

The loose packaged .22LR manufactured by Remington usually comes in a 550 rounds box. I have 'bricks' of .22LR manufactured by Winchester, CCI, and Federal that come in 10 seperate 50 round boxes.. I have noticed that some of the .22LR ammunition come in 400 rounds 'bricks' now - such as the 'Golden Eagle' brand..

One of these years, I may have to drive the 200+ miles round trip from the house just to go to the nearest Wally World from here... I have been to the WW stores before, but it is usually when I go out of state to visit my family..

The "brick" I currently have on hand is Winchester brand. CCI Stingers also come 50 to a box. I like the Stingers in my pistol.

According to our local WM, he can't get the handgun ammo in fast enough and when he does it is gone the same day. There was some .22 ammo there last time but he said that it would be gone by the end of the day so we better get it now if we needed it.
He did state that there were limits but that is because the supply is not matching the demand right now and hunting season is upon us!

Just asked my local WM sporting goods dept. salesman, my son. He said they got a memo from corp. to limit rifle and handgun ammo to 6 boxes per purchase per person per day. Mostly done to slow down the ammo run so there's some for everybody. The stockpile people were making runs on the ammo as soon as it came in shutting out regular customers. Their ammo inventory is now pretty good. No limit on shotgun ammo.

My locat WM is limiting us to six boxes of 50 rounds per customer per day. That's not keeping my wife, mother, father, and all the siblings from making purchases as well.....!

Wise forward looking citizens are voting with their pocketbook. Lack of faith in those that have in the past been unfriendly towards personal freedoms, has encouraged them to buy now and buy often. I know quite a few people that have several lifetimes worth of ammunition.

If partition or civil war occurs, the person prepared for such things would be better off than those that didn't.

Our local Wallys actually have all the common calibers in stock... maybe not on a regular basis, but I have seen the hard to find stuff lately... .223, .380, 9, 40, and 45 calibers...

I know a local dealer that went and bought everything WM had, marked it up a buck, and put it on his shelves... he couldn't find anything, Wally did, and he abused the 'non policy'...

It's also possible that Walmart had a meeting, and determined that if some nut, purchased a truckload of their cheap ammo and then went on a shooting rampage, the headlines would probably read:

"World's largest discount chain stocked killer's arsenal"

They're probably the country's biggest ammo supplier to the public as it is. If they weren't there wouldn't be threads like this.

We didn't plan on purchasing any ammo while at Wal-mart today, but after reading this thread the other day my husband and I just had to look and see what ours was doing. They appear to only carry about half as much as they used to before the remodel and they are limiting purchases to 2 boxes per person. Interesting. They were also out-of-stock of several types.

Simple matter of supply not keeping up with demand. Stopped in local gun shop to buy some .22L. He said after several months he was finally getting some backordered ammo in. I expect with a surging supply prices might come down a bit if supply surpasses demand.

My dad was in the Ozarks for a couple years about age 12. He said .22 shorts and pocket knives were pretty well the currency equivalent for boys. His father had a crack-barrel .22. He would be sent out to furnish dinner/supper meat with a single .22 shell. He said he became a pretty good shot as a result. Said he was lucky not to have broken his neck going after some possums up a tree - so he could save the .22 for another day.
