(Wait while I hit myself in the head with a 2X4) What does it take to be a Mod?

Probably best to ask in the Admin site.

We're hoping to build in the next 5 years or so. Hoping for thick slab with radiant floor heating, some solar (but on the grid too), SIPs, and possibly berming part of it. An alternative construction forum would be nice.

I read a book that suggested putting down used bricks instead of a concrete slab. It's just like building a brick patio and it won't crack if it settles. I've got a pile of brick from a house they tore down and hopefully I'll have a new free floor by spring.
I know it's off topic but Turtlehead mentioned using a slab so I thought I'd throw in a money saving tip. Old bricks have a lot of character too. I should specify my walls are held on piers not the brick.

The Permies kinda scare me.
And all is right in the world.

I think an alternative building forum on HT would be excellent.

The alternative building forum at permies.com focuses on stuff like Oehler PSP structures, straw bale, cob, ferro cement, pole buildings from actual poles, log structures, stone .... things that are a bit more eco/green/hippie/etc. An alternative building forum here would include that stuff and also cover cinder block, poured cement, glued cinder block, foam and poured cement, chip board, conventional building with slight alternatives, traditional underground .... all alternatives, not just the eco alternatives.
