I've got an F350... gets 17 to 20, depending on how fast I go. I'll keep it.

However, if someone would sell one of those 'throwaway cars' (less than 2k) I've read about, I'd grab one in a heartbeat.

What about safety? What about it??? Anyone ever done a crash test with motorcycles? I think they ALL fail. I'd rather drive a micro car or a mini instead of a motorbike.... at least I'm out of the rain.

I get faint when I see how much a replacement for my truck costs... over 50K! Not gonna happen. My diesel's just getting broke in good, 12 years later.

Local Ford dealership has less than two dozen cars, but several hundred trucks... Not uncommon for small businesses to come in and buy ten at a time.

Rant:
Man, if there's one thing we Americans can do, it's make excuses and complain. It's like we'd rather bankrupt our nation, alter the climate, squander the last of the oil and collapse our economy from under ourselves rather than admit that we can't command the planet to give us as much oil as we want forever.
I don't think the global supply of oil really cares what kind of car I want to drive, how safe I feel in it, how many people I need to drive around, what kind of roads I drive on, what I need to pull around or even what I need do use on MY farm. It's not about ME. Peak oil and the coming energy crisis also doesn't really care who is president. We need to get over it.
This nation needs to ration its use of oil so we have some chance of having some energy left over to build the infrastructure necessary to run all our energy hogging garbage on some other sources and we need to face up to the fact that we need to scale back on energy consumption and quit whining like the spoiled brats we are. Sheesh, people.
I mean, I'm contributing to the destruction of everything almost as much as the next guy, but I'm aware of what I'm doing and I am taking steps to use less by all the homesteading/self sufficiency/community stuff I do. I like to pretend that's what we're all doing, but a bunch of posts here are bringing me to the reality that some of us are squabbling/blaming people/complaining all over meaningless stuff while our nation (and civilization in general) is falling down around us.
I drive a suzuki swift (Geo Metro) that gets 50mpg and i'm prolly gonna buy a ford escort diesel that gets 50 mpg so i can run it on homebrew and i'm still not pretending me having my own car to drive wherever i want is anything but an arrogant display of planet killing wastefulness.

K, I'm done ranting now.

Thank you Ray! I think it's crucial to start adapting now to a more energy poor future now, while there is still enough fuel to build new infrastructure. Better to invest in alternative energy infrastructure now because soon that will be all we have!

We have a Dodge Durango that we only use to haul our utility trailer, horse trailer, pop-up camper, or if we have more than five people we need to get around...oh, and if the snow is REALLY bad.....so we use this vehicle RARELY.

We have a Honda Fit that I use all the time. I have three teens and a husband who is 6'3" and 240lbs. When I first pulled up to the feed store in this car, they laughed til they saw how much I can fit in it.....feed, groceries, kids......Even the manager at the feed store starting asking me more and more about my car cause they were interested in getting one after watching me.....And, I get great mileage too!

My husband drives a Hyudai Elantra stick shift to work.

Oh, AND my husband couldn't believe it, but he fits in the Honda better than the Dodge....and the Dodge only gets 13mpg...ARGH...the Honda and the Hyundai get in the 30's....
