There is a window across the kitchen from the fridge at our ranch, so it is inside, but in plain view. We had a bear break into the house, trash it, break into the fridge, trash it too. We found food containers from the fridge and pantry covering an area of several acres.
We were gone for a week. We have no idea how long the fridge was hanging open running full bore trying to stay cold. The bear also turned on the broiler on the oven to HIGH and it ran for days too. Nearly burned the house down!

Thank you so much for all the ideas. I live in bear country BC. And yes all the trouble maker bears are shipped into our area. There is a huge grizz population here. You would never keep your freezer in your home, the bears just come in through the windows and trash the joint. I personally have nothad this happen but it happens all the time here. And you should see what they do to cars, just for fun.

In NW Ontario cottage country, they build garbage bin cages out of chain link fencing and 2 x 6 lumber. They seem to hold up against black bears, but I have no idea how they would manage against grizzlies. And even if it was secure, i am sure you don't want to listen to bears banging away on it for hours at a time. I would think electric would be the most effective solution.

Ok, now bouzer here will let you know if theres a bear hangin around, but hes not all that great about doing much about them.
However, since I got "Killer", we have not seen one single bear anywhere near our farm! Not only that, the lions and tigers and elephant population has become nonexistent as well.

How about wrapping the freezer in Camo Tape? The bear can't see it, maybe. I have zero experience on this one. I

How do I keep bears out of my freezer? I don't give them keys to my house.

If you are in Griz country, you really really should get the fridge inside a protected area... to not do so may cost a griz it's life, and worse, some humans could get in trouble, after a griz gets food. Black bears, imho, are more dangerous than griz... letting a bear eat food for any reason is unconsciousanable (sp?). The blackie may decide to feast upon a little one, your dog, or maybe you... think about a junkie needing a fixxx... a bear makes a junkie look like a slacker.
Unless you're living in a teepee, there's really no reason to not have the freezer inside.
Can't do that, build a framework of plywood, with very sharp nails or screws facing outwards, and one piece to cover the lid. I've worked in lots of cabins in grizzly country, and done properly, nailed outer doors and window shutters will keep bears out.

I know some people who keep their freezers and refrigators outside because it generates heat (true) and would rather have it outside so they can keep their indoors cooler....

I've heard tales of a bear-killing-kitten before, but that could just be a myth...

That's definitely true down here in the tropics... three of our four freezers are outside. But up in the glaciated regions of the world, where grizzlies still roam free (along with their cousins, the Blackies), wouldn't a person want that extra heat 'inside' the home.
Iffen I did live up north, 'specially around grizzers, I'd want my life insurance policy (a freezer full of grub) to be well protected, and not subject to a blitzkreig raid by a band of yogi's.
