Having loved Nanci Griffith's music forever, I've known for a long time. She's got a beautiful song, "Once in a Very Blue Moon". On one of her albums, she did a lot of talking before each song....... must've been a live album.

What is it called when the moon is full sets and then reappears and resets?

Another definition for "Blue Moon" is the Second full moon that "falls within the Same Astrological Sign". And, I believe that falls somewhat less frequently than "Two Full moons in a Calendar month.
I don'r recall how often it does occur, though.

Back when I frequently associated with the Folks that were really into Astrologial Charts, I learned that there is a whole different way of "Looking at the Stars". They have Books that give all sorts of details and occurences.
To each his own, I guess.

Well, its bound to occur at least once a year. There are 12 months, (as well as 12 zodiac signs per year). Since the moon "cycles" every 29 days and there are 365 days in a normal year, you divide 365 by 29 and you get 13 full moons in year. That means at least two have to fall in the same month at some point during the year. Depending upon the phasing of the moon in a given year you will even have this phenomenon occurring twice in some years.

Historically, seasons were timed by full moons - twelve each year. The moons were named, these names varied with different peoples, names such as harvest moon (in Cincinnati there was a Harvest Moon Festival", growing moon, snow moon, egg moon, Lent moon etc.

Most years have 12 moons with each moon having a name, but some years have thirteen full moons so the early moon was named a "blue moon", which then re-aligned the rest of the year's moons to their proper 'seasons'.

OK I did Google this:
* January - Wolf moon[1], Hunger moon, Old moon
* February - Snow moon[1], Ice moon
* March - Worm moon[1], Sap moon, Sugaring moon, Crow moon, Storm moon
* April - Pink moon[1], Egg moon, Grass moon, Rain moon, Growing moon
* May - Flower moon[1], Planting moon, Milk moon, Hare moon
* June - Strawberry moon[1], Rose moon, Honey moon, Mead moon
* July - Buck moon[1], Thunder moon, Deer moon, Hay moon
* August - Sturgeon moon[1], Corn moon, Fruit moon, Barley moon
* September - Harvest moon (moon nearest autumn equinox)[1]
* October - Hunter's moon[1] (moon after harvest moon), Bunky moon
* November - Beaver moon[1], Frosty moon, Snow moon
* December - Cold moon, Long Night moon[1], Winter moon

The Main Farmer's Almanac started the belief that the third full moon in a season with four full moons is called a blue moon.
Very informative. Something I'll have to keep referenced for my pagan travels. Thank you

It does happen most years, but not every year. There wasn't one last year.

All of you who said it's the second full moon in a month are right but it only happens every 2.7 years on average. There are 11 days extra after every 12 month cycle and this adds up to the second full moon after nearly 3 years.

I know this one because my last dd was born on a blue moon. She has proven to be as unique as a blue moon as well.

The live album of which you speak is "One Fair Summer Evening"

I love her older music - I became less of a fan when she got too politically left for my tastes

I guess I'm in the minority here, I like Blue Moon beer. But I rarely buy it, or any other beer. I get most of mine for free
