Boy you ain't kiddin'! I absolutely can't wait to get out there. If I could go now I would.

Seems like even in winter it's not nice here in the Keys. This past winter I think we had two weeks of nice weather. I'd love to be able to open up the windows and have real air.

Most of our friends think we're nuts to move though. People pay big bucks to come here on vacation. I'll probably come back to visit, but I sure don't like living here.

Let's see...21 days and it's moving day. Woohoo!!

What invention of the last 100 years or so, has had the most profound effect upon the United States?

I would argue that it is air conditioning.

It is slowly changing the population patterns of the country. It has certainly also changed the health patterns of the country. Not to mention the way we in the South build our homes.

I would concur!
Before the AC folks would sit out at night and talk. Even in the cities, there was porch sitting and neighborly activities. Once the AC came along, everybody is locked away inside and no one sees anyone else.
Ok.. the AC and the TV.

And a real old fashioned Southern home is quite cool in the summers.
It was built under the trees with VERY high ceilings and low windows.
It was two stories to draw the heat up and oput of the openings in the attic space. In a properly built old house you can get quite a breeze blowing through on a hot day.
And they had the transom windows above all of the doors so that even with the doors closed the hot air could escape a room.
You just won't find a modern house built that way, no sir.

If they built modern houses that way, summer would be much nicer.

I remember sitting out on the porch in the summers in Wisconsin. As a kid we'd play outside until it was dark. Even my own kids did it in Arkansas all summer. Here if you step out the door in the evening the mosquitoes will carry you away. Even the dog gets swarmed. We have Mosquito Control drive around spraying each evening but it's still thick with mosquitoes. I hate to think how bad it would be if we didn't have Mosquito Control!

I do miss sitting out all summer in the evenings. It'll be nice to do that again.
