I didn't notice any smell. He may have done it when my husband picked him up though. He put the snake in a bucket and gave it to me to look up. We always let them go if they aren't poisonous. So far we haven't had a venomous one here although there are quite a few varieties in Arkansas that are poisonous.

DixyDoodle, I would look at the eyes. Probably catch the snake and really look it over too. Except for one big water snake that I found in my garden. It came up out of the mulch and struck at me. All I saw was a diamond shaped head! Beat the poor thing with a shovel and didn't realize it was a water snake until it finally flipped the rest of it's body out from under the mulch and I saw the coloring. It was the only snake I ever purposefully killed and I have felt horrible about it ever since. Now I check twice. One of these days I'll probably get bit by a poisonous snake and not live to tell the tale.

Patt, do you still have the snake in question? If so could you get some more pictures of it? The underbelly and a close-up of the head would be great. If not could you ask your dh if the snake got him with musk?

That looks like a baby Corn Snake to me. Kinda light on the coloring, but there are a lot of variances in those. Is he checkered on the underbelly? That would be another clue. It's not a poisonous snake. Garter snakes are striped, not spotted. That one there is in the rat snake family.
