the smell is probably coming from page # 420. rip it out and the smell should go away.

I second the charcoal thingy.

Plus, a great way to make the book smell nice is dryer sheets. A couple sheets of bounce laid between the pages genrally works. For added stregth put it into a zip loc bag in the sun to cook the new big stink in.

I personally can't stand strong chemical smells so I would certainly be torn either way.

I would send a funny email about mentioning in future sales that they are SMOKERS. Something like this:

Dear ebay seller,

Thank you for the book. May I suggest you please mention having a smoking household in your future listings. While I love the book I now have to auction it again in order to pay for the bail that resulted from said item getting my car searched. I enjoy institutional food and small confined spaces so consider the vacation a bonus.

Thanks again.

It is probably that patchouli oil perfume or cologne. I don't know why anyone would want to go around smelling like (a) dope, but that is what it smells like and it is a persistant odor. I had a coworker that wore the stuff and it took at least an hour after he left my classroom before the odor dissipated.

If indeed the odor is secondhand marijuana the seller must have been a HUGE user of it. Wonder what would have happened if you happened to be a law enforcement officer.

Probably nothing as the sellers could just claim they bought it at an auction, flea market, used book store, etc.

I second the use of cat liter----probably used cat liter if the odor is as strong as you make it sound, and it probably is. Unless you've been a library worker I doubt most folk would understand just how easily odors transfer from a home into books.

Donated books of great importance were put into paper grocery bags along with some cat liter to help remove musty odor. If one week in exile didn't do the trick the book was given another week to straighten up or ship out.

Ozum or Fabreeze. Cut up Apples and leave it in a bag withwhat ever is causing the odor. Did I miss what the book title is?

I am a former Customs Inspector, and DH is currently one. I am keeping the book, and by airing it out in the sunshine, the smell is dissipating.

I forgot to mention, our dog flunked out of Customs drug dog school!

Someone else from this site once suggested to me that we put papers in a bag with cat litter! It worked! We had loaned a notebook with important files in it to someone who returned it reeking of cigarette smoke. We put it in a box with top, clean cat litter in the bottom and left it there a few days, then opened up the notebook to new pages, etc. It worked. We also put a few clean coffee grounds in the box after a week too and I think that helped out. Good luck
