.22s are very accurate. You can get one for less than a hundred bucks...I'd say go with rifle...easier to be accurate with a rifle than a handgun. Practice till you can hit a small lemon from about 20 yards...that shouldn't take long. A small lemon is about the size of a skunks head. Look at used .22 rifles too...cheap, and they are easy to shoot as they have almost no recoil...You can even get very quiet loads so there won't be much disturbance...good luck.
