I think vegies & herbs intermingled with flowers and visa versa are delightful.

BUT as ronbre stated corn's funny & needs to be planted in blocks (not cement) but planted squares for wind polination.

You could still get corn if you hand pollinated the plants. I got a good crop of baby corn once from 10 plants. If the flower bed corn is planted real close to the time the real crop is planted the wind will pollinate for you, if the plots are close enough.

And the corn could be used as a base or trellis for flowering vines, black-eyed-susan (or in this case, black-eyed-DJ), climbing nasturtiums, scarlet runner beans (pretty flowers, attracts hummingbirds), morning glory, mandevilla, etc.

Ask your wife if you can plant your corn in her flower bed.

It could be that she uses something in htere that isn't suitable for fertilizing food, but is fine for flowers.

Plant, it but plant it with flowers that will vine around it - then you can
tell her it's a flower experiment for her garden. And, when that vining
plant begins to flower, no way will she pull it out!

My hubby isn't allowed in my new flower-bed - last year he thought he
was helping by pulling weeds and he pulled all my sunflowers up - even
more pitiful was that he tried to replant them - he got an A for effort though on that part - now he doesn't give it a second look.

OK a second tactic, plausable deniability. Two words "volunteer corn" Don't actually deny planting it (that'd be wrong,) just suggest it could be volunteer corn, meaning left over seed from last years harvest. I suggest a fairly prompt retreat with that one.

Bare spots in spring doesn't mean there's no flower there. If I found "volunteer" corn in my flower bed it'd be dead corn 'cause I'd pull the "weed."
