Our daughter has a job interview in Columbia tomorrow. If she gets hired, she'll be leaving our neck of MO, and moving there.
Hoping she does get the job. She'd be very good in the position, and she and her husband really want to live near a large city.
Wonder how many folks on here are in MO?

Good luck to your daughter!
I think there are lots of Mo folks here, whenever a MO subject comes op lots of folks from MO respond.

Been here most of my life except a short time spent in OK in the early 80's in the "oil boom". It really made me appreciate the Ozarks of So MO. Great recreational area for hiking, fishing, hunting, and just enjoying God's creation. OK was just too flat and windy for this country boy! Speaking as a native, we tend to be a little "cautious" of others moving to our area due to many who have tried to move in and change the life we love. This makes us a little protective of our area. But now as a real estate agent I meet many who are wanting to call our area home and I'll have to say, most I would be glad to have as neighbors!
No area is perfect of course but I feel the good definitely outweighs the bad and wouldn't want to live anywhere else! Good luck in finding your dream. TC

Hi, my name is Emma. I've been living in northern Mo most my life (adair county area) and reading through these replies I feel that there is a thing or two missing about Missouri (or at least the northern part).
Animals: Despite what the local conservation department will say, they are re-releasing a lot of stuff into the wild up here. One in particular was a very large amount of rattlesnakes. The cougar and bobcat populations have gone from non-existant to amazingly large in just the last three years (also another two species we suspect the conservation dept. on). A couple of months ago a local farmer thought there was a coyote was in his henhouse and shot at it, once he pulled out the carcass he found out it was a tagged wolf. To top that off a couple of counties away from us another has spotted possible bear tracks. We're getting a lot of critters up here that aren't normal for us, so I do warn. IF YOUR COMING TO NORTHERN MISSOURI TO LIVE, PACK A PISTOL! It's not legal to carry it loaded in your car unless you've got a conceal carry permit, but I suggest having something while out in the wild or on farm land.
Weather: The last couple of years we've had quite the flooding problem. 2008 even brought flooding bad enough in one of the local towns that it was declared a disaster area and brought in federal aide.
This last winter was the first real winter in at least a couple decades that we've had real snow, usually it's ice storms for us.
People: Most the time your locals are pretty nice and friendly, but I would be a tad bit careful. We get some people looking for nice open farm areas to hide meth making equipment and to plant pot. Spot-lighting and poaching is also a problem expecially if you are trying to cultivate your land to support nice big bucks for runs.
I can't think of anything else majorly important to know before buying land up here, but as it's been a few years since being alone in the country I don't know it all.

Gonna have to talk to the Conservation Department about spending tax money bringing in truckloads of rattlers. Seems an awful waste of money. We could just turn loose millions of rats and grow our own.
Cougars: Occasionally a lone male looking for new territory will come down out of the badlands, but it is a Loooong walk.
Bobcats: Yup, got quite a few of them. Even in the Ozarks you might normally see 1 or 2 a year. They help keep the wild turkey population in check...darn it!
Wolf: See Cougar's above
Bear: Similar to cougars and wolves. They come up from Arkansas where they were re-introduced several years ago. More of a problem for southern Missouri. A friend in an Arkansas border county lost all 6 of his beehives to a bear.

Unless northern Missouri has different laws than the rest of the state; If you can legally own a firearm (long gun or hand gun) you are allowed to carry it loaded with you in the car. CCW permit is only if you get out of the car and want to carry concealed, thus the name. This law took effect about 4 years ago.
People: Yeah, we have our share of meth labs, and pot growers. 20 years ago, a neighbor let a fire get away from his meth lab, turned into a brush fire, burned up 14 hives of my bees. He got 3 years, I didn't even get reimbursed. Sucks to have bad neighbors, but it can happen anywhere.
Now Emma you musn't be discouraging these Furr'iners this way. I understand they got strange ways and depend on streetlights and all but there is hope that some of them will be worth the effort to rehabilitate.

Really, Emma! Don't be scaring folks away! Lots of states have trouble with the DNR and such, but overall, MO is still a great place to be.
Yes, it's been wet up here, no doubt. I have to slog to the chicken tractors 2x a day, but I know it will dry out in the next week or two.
As Adron said, you CAN carry your firearm in your car. You can carry it open, as a matter of fact. Just not supposed to carry it concealed without a permit. Some folks without CCW permit "forget" that they have their pistol in their pocket, but no one is going to try to take it away -- at least around here, you'd just get a warning to carry open or get the permit.
Snakes? Hm, haven't seen rattlers, but even so, we had those in IL/WI, and they aren't looking for trouble.
Biggest problem here is 'coons and 'possums. We have a few coyotes, but local trappers keep the numbers down. Oh, yeah, and Nick had to shoot a skunk by the hen house a couple weeks back. P.U.!
It's pretty in MO, it's free in MO, the people (overall) are great, and now that we're here, we intend to stay put.

I left the cornfields of Middle Earth, AKA Illinois, and moved to Missouri in the late 1960's when I was 17. I met DH, a Missouri native, in Kansas City shortly thereafter. We have lived or traveled all over Missouri. Now, 40 years later, we are living on a farm about a mile from where DH was born on his grandparents farm in the Ozarks. Missouri has it all. I can't imagine living anywhere else. The people are great, the climate has 4 seasons in most years, and you can find a variety of land to suit your needs. Good luck!

I ain't trying to scare them away (most of the rich city people and farming corporations have already taken away most of our land at dirt cheap prices) But, it does seem like everyone is screaming "missouri is heaven!" and I want to enforce the fact that there isn't a place on earth that has no troubles. And btw, the CCL covers having any gun in your car loaded, otherwise that's why shotgun racks were made for. If you get stopped and found with a loaded gun hidden like under your seat, you will definately get questioned by the cops and possibly the gun taken away, while if you have ammo and gun separated they'll just ask where you were headed and mostly leave you alone.
Missouri is a very nice place to live, but the housing boom several years ago sent most of us from the countryside into the towns just so we could sell our land at what was very high prices then. Land has skyrocketed since and almost all that's left out in the countryside up here is non native missourians.

Well, of course, my opinions are based only on my experience in NW MO. We own the smallest farm in the smallest county in the state, and there aren't a lot of rich city people around here -- far from it. It's also the poorest county in the state. <shrug>
Land prices around here are still incredibly affordable.
If folks sold out their land to go to the city, that was their choice. We came from near a big city because we know that's not where we ever want to live.
Sure, there are drawbacks anywhere you live. But weighing the pros and cons, we like it here.

Where are you getting your (mis)information?
Missouri Carry Look under "Concealed Carry" then "Automobile."

Do I need a CCW to carry in my automobile? - No. Anyone age 21 or over, and otherwise legally able to own a handgun may carry that handgun concealed or not concealed in the passenger compartment of their automobile, loaded. . It only applies when the person is inside the vehicle.
|
Also, it is CCW not CCL. If you are stopped and asked if you have a weapon, tell them. If you are asked where you are going, thats a "NunYa", but I suggest you be a little more discreet.

I have another question. Since we are on the subject. I got into some trouble when I was younger and can't possess a firearm. Here in georgia I can archery hunt and use a crossbow or any type of bow. I want to be legal, always, and wondered if the laws were the same there? We have the same critters here as you do there and the meth labs are bad here too. Georgia is a state that is run and influenced by the capitol. Atlanta is bigger than its city limits. The people here are mostly transfers and the taxes are outrageous. I want to simplify my life and find a home to someday retire and work my little farm and fight off the critters. I have a lot to learn, but from what I've seen, there are many in Missouri that would be willing to teach and help me. Thanks.
