DH used the $14.95 Home Depot book "Tiling" to do the bathroom floor at the new place with tiles like in Nevada's pic. Turned out nice. The floor was laid right on the slab after doing some leveling. Whoever pointed out that you can see the flaws in the substrate is absolutely correct but you will probably be your own biggest critic.
DH says: Get the book & read it. Make sure you get everything you need at once, before something is discontinued. In our case that was the baseboard tiles with the bullnose. That turned out to be a mixed blessing however as cutting strips 3" wide from scraps and new tiles saved considerable coin. The cutter we used was passed on to me from my brother who used the same tile on his log house. All the cutters I ever used score the tile like a glass cutter and then have a ridge and pressure bar that allows you to use the cutter arm to snap to the line. The toughest cutting job was fitting the pieces around the toilet. That diamond blade for the saber saw was real slow and hard. The wires that go into a hack saw same way. I think they are intended for wall tiles, I assume that floor tile is much harder. I didn't have a sacrificial table saw.
