We live in the middle of "Old Order Amish Central". Most of the amish we've met are nice, a few of the "elders" are best to just be ignored cause that's what they do to us.
They are nice in the way you don't have to worry about them shooting things up, terrorizing the neighborhood, etc., BUT they have other qualities that really suck.
With our group in our immediate 5 mile radius area, forget about the nice clean beautiful farms pictured in magazines. Picture junk lying everywhere, houses that should be condemmed (if they buy farms with old houses on them), skinny unkempt livestock. They really keep our property taxes down, which is good, but honestly we get sick of looking at shabby places every day.
Their livestock care is minimal. You'll see them driving buggy & draft horses with visable skeletons and definate lameness. They use some methods of vet treatment from the dark ages (did you know that to cure colic, you shove an onion into the horse's rectum? My vet pulled an onion out of one unlucky horse. Did you also know that if your horse is foundering you don't put it on soft bedding and give it bute, you bleed it out until it faints from loss of blood and that makes it better? My husband witnessed the end of that) And the best one of late is the neighbor's 18 m.o. daughter has been having seizures, so instead of taking her to the doctor, they have their self taught chiropractor adjust her and say she's cured.
We can't wait until our house sells and we can move.
