I used to have terrible heartburn and acid reflux - made my life miserable. I went on a diet (to lose weight) and all my acid problems disappeared. It is basically what amounts to a modified Kosher diet (I'm not Jewish by the way). I don't eat pork or any bottom feeding aquatic critters; the only oils I use are olive and real butter; I cut out most refined sugar and as much pre-prepared pre-packaged food as possible (no more chips, flavored crackers, packaged seasonings, etc.) as well as fast food.

There is still some of that stuff in some of the things we get at the store like bread, mayo, etc. but cutting out the major stuff has made the difference. I think a lot of mine was preservatives as well. I noticed a problem with regular peanut butter, but not with the all natural stuff (just nuts and salt).

I can eat things I never could before - raw onions, horseradish, etc. Those things would have put me in a world of pain before and I do LOVE my horseradish.

It is so worth it to live without the pain and misery all the time. Saves a lot of money not having to buy meds as well. I was really close to seeing the doctor about it and would have if it had persisted.

I dont drink sodas at all. I omit many foods that I like and go without when I make them for my family, such as pizza, tomato based meals etc.

Some days are better than others, but this has been going on for years and as I detest hospitals with a passion I have refused to have someone look at the 'cause' rather than treat it. I have had the test to see if it was a bacteria, but that came back negative.

Mikes post has made me realise that I need to find out the cause and make sure I am ok, if not for my sake, but for my husband and children.

This thread has been a wake up call......and I am sure Lavndrgal would not mind.

Yes, get checked out. I have lenghty Barretts Esoph from long term reflux and have to get scopes every 6 months. They do multiple biopsies each time with the last one being approx 40 of them.

Not only that, but I aspirate the acid into my lungs and now have breathing problems due to the damage.

They now are wanting to strip the lining of my esophagus in two seperate surgeries and also do gastric bypass to keep the acid down. It's not being done for weight loss but to try and save my lungs and esoph.

The fastest way I can get rid of it is to take a tsp of vinegar. Plain vinegar. Its nasty as all get out...but it works like a charm. You probably dont need this solution anymore...lol..but for the future.

Hey yall thanks so much for posting to my thread. Heartburn is gone. I drank more water than usual. I seem to forget to drink enough water until I get a headache.

For those of you with more serious heartburn related issues my heart and prayers go out to you. Bless your hearts that is very sad to have to live with such pain. My prayer is for your healing. Thank you for sharing your experiences you may be helping someone by doing so.

Baking Soda was used in warm water for me also. I still take it once in awhile.
It helps.

I would suggest seeing the Dr. There is all sorts of things causing it. I had congested heart failure and almost died. The Dr told me that is one of the main signs to alert you.
Soda water worked but fluid built from it. Be very careful and seek help.

Why would they do a gastric bypass? Have you ever had a Nissen fundoplication? I'd think that'd be far less drastic than a gastrc bypass. It saved my daughter's lungs! She still takes twice daily Nexium but she can eat and breathe.

I'm not a canidate for the Nissen fundoplication. This has been an approx 12 year ongoing ordeal. Many test and many second opinions over the years and they all basically say the same thing. The surgeons here will not do any surgery on me, they want me to have it in Dallas.

I had surgery (banding-not lap banding) for weight reduction 19 years ago and had to have it removed 10 years ago due to all the damage that it was causing. I've already had three abdom. surgeries.

The bypass is drastic surgery which at my age is why I'm dragging my feet. The doctors have already told me even if I have the surgery, it will not stop the celluar changes in my esoph, but it would stop futher acid.

I lived for 9 years with the limited eating so I know that I can handle that, I just don't want anymore major surgery.

I just wish that I had went when I first started having the reflux instead of letting it so for so long.

Heartburn--try 10 or so baking Almonds

I have tried many things. If I buy the right brand of Papaya enzyme it works fine, if not it doesn't help.

Hence, I found that eating 10 - 15 almonds works great ---no more heartburn!

I also avoid bananas as they give me a case of heartburn.

Well, this is what works for me.

One caution about baking soda. This was my great uncle's remedy of choice that he used regularly. When he was old, he was hospitalized for bleeding ulcers that they attributed to his constant use of baking soda. He did not leave the hospital as they could not operate, for some reason.
