Gases will exit the point that has the least resistance to air flow. Often times this is accomplished by (1) using a vent pipe having a larger diameter than the toliet seat opening and/or (2) having the bottom of the vent pipe start at a higher elevation than the bottom of the toliet opening (This is often accomplished by inserting a rim or baffle that is placed in septic tank opening where the toliet is attached.)

this is probably another reason why they tell you to keep the lid on the toilet and the door closed to the outhouse(the ones out here all say that, it's for the flies too.)
