I still feel badly about my first penpal as a young teen. She lived in England and after trying to compose a few letters in English I realized my English skills weren't good enough for a whole letter yet...lol. I let her know that I had to drop out. She was very understanding.
For about 13 years I've had a penpal in N. Ireland. For years and years we wrote snail mail letters, now it's email and not nearly as nice. But having to get a letter weighed at the post office is a 6 mile trip and email is so much quicker.

Someone sent a letter once to our small post office requesting a pen pal. The post mistress put the letter up on a bulletin board to see if anyone wanted to write back. We wrote back and forth for awhile, but we didn't really have much in common so it kinda petered out after a bit. So even though this particular instance didn't quite last that long, (less than five years) you could send letters to post masters of small post offices requesting a pen pal.
Writing a letter is entirely different than typing. Other than no spell check, it exercises fingers differently than typing and is good exercise for thinking before writing. It is difficult to go back and edit. I've discovered it is also fun to write with pen and ink, sometimes to the level of shaping a goose quill into a pen to do it with. Last time I did that I was using a small pocket knife which is generally referred to as a "pen knife" and it hit me why they are referred to as pen knives. See if you can get that sort of insight from email!
Guess I should send some snail mail to some non-computer friends, they do get left out, don't they?

I don't have any penpals at the moment, but as a kid, I had probably 30 at one time or another. Two, a girl from England and a boy from Lithuania, I am still in contact with via Facebook. The English girl even came for a visit after we grew up. We have known each other since we were about 13 and are now in our mid 30's.
Count me in. I'd love to have a real penpal again!
I'm a mom of one with one on the way, and we just moved to our piece of dirt. No animals yet except three beagles. I really want goats and chickens.
PM me if interested.

Oh this sounds like a great idea! I never had the opportunity to have a pen pal while growing up but would love the chance now. Here is a little about myself: female, married and mother to 1 son (10). We live on a small farm with chickens, draft horses, and dogs. We are located in central Illinois and enjoy working outside and in the garden.
I really enjoyed reading all of your experiences here with past pen pals. They sound really neat and heartfelt.

Call me old fashioned but I don't care much for facebook or myspace. I don't especially like that everything is out there for all to see. I much rather pick and chose who knows what about me and mine, call me paranoid, my kids do! I would love to be a pen pal and get to know people that way . PM if your interested.

It is so nice to see, that others believe also in a what seems to be a dying art, in our so busy and outta control world.. I say the world could use more friends if that were possible? But again it'd have to be, meant to be.. So here, I'll share my story too.
As a kid, I also had a penpal, a boy from England, it was fun to hear of the difference in our schooling. At 14 he had to choose what he'd become in life and only study that.. Of coarse we lost contact as I have with many penpals over the years.. But a gal wrote me when I had an article in a magazine, we wrote for a while, then we had both moved, divorced, remarried, moved furthar, and a couple years had past. I had another article in a mag. and the moment I saw that handwriting, my heart leaped, I knew it was her. And I was right, she had no idea it was me, as names and states had changed.. But of all, the people in the world, wow, it was surely meant to be.. And this time around, gee, it's been over 35 years that we've written... Thru' so many ups and downs, and all my moves to here and there, she has really become family.. By the way she lives in Alaska, has no computer, tho' she could, but not everyone wants to become, "Techno". So no matter if we go back to 1800's postage fees, she and I will mail our novels the old fashion way.. Opps, guess not, we no longer lick stamps do we??
Best of luck to each and everyone of you, who reads my post...........

my daughter just recently acquired a penpal. A girl in Iowa I believe she said. She loves to write letters. I have never been that good of a penpal myself.

I have had a couple of pen pals through the years. The first was through grades 4-8 with a person from Australia and eventually the letters ceased for no particular reason other then perhaps 2 young people taking divergent and new paths in life.
The second was from early grade 10 to present...however it is now somewhat sporadic letters usually only 2-3 times a year. She lives about 2,000 miles away from us and though we have never met, we have exchanged personal and family pictures quite a few times.
If someone is looking for a new pen pal, PM me and I can provide further details.

I too would like to be a pen pal! I used to write to my grandma when I was in college. She is gone now and I tightly hold onto those letters from her! If anyone is interested, let me know!
