I am trying hard not to take offense to what you said here.
Yes I live in Florida. But I do live in a so called cat country. We do have them here in Florida in case you do not know. I have seen 3 over the years with my own eyes. If you spend enough time out in the woods where they are you will see one from time to time if your lucky.
I have also seen Bears,Bobcats and all other kinds of critters over the years between here in Florida and other places I have traveled hunting and such.

A cat's claws are useless when fully retracted. Walking on snow or ice, they carry them on half cock, like a revolver.

FWIW, those look exactly like Bowie's tracks he leaves in the mud. Bowie is a dog, of course... I do not have a pet cougar. To me, the proportion of toe to pad just isn't right for feline, nor is the set of the print.
LOL, you should add a poll.
Regardless, you have something large and carnivorous near your animals. Respond accordingly.
Unless perhaps manna has fallen from the skies and you've had a stray LGD just show up.

I had a St. Bernard. His paws were bigger than my hand.
The middle toes on that print are the same length...cougars would have one longer than the other.

"that dog would have to be 7' long - without the tail - and 350 lbs. Either it is the largest silvertip wolf ever found, or it's a cat."
350 lbs would be 150lbs larger than pretty much any male cougar, so what kind of cat are you suggesting, a lion?

It is a dog, besides the tracks which are clearly canine, look at the behavior of the animal. It walks with in 4 feet of the house and them takes a nap behind the pig shelter. That is not typical behavior of any wild animal, but very typical of a domestic dog. My guess would be its a LGD out on a walk about.

I wish the snow would have stayed around for a while longer as I would have loved for one of the area farmers/hunters to take a look at the tracks. Having seen the tracks come from across the wheat fields and beyond there is DNR land, I would have a hard time believing it was someone's dog. Not too many residents around here to start off with, plus never seen any dogs of good size around here either.
Those tracks definitely got my attention though! Made me wonder what came through here, as they were not the usual tracks we see from moose, elk and deer that make their way across here on a frequent basis.
Thanks for the input.

Be offended if it makes you happy!
I'm fooling around here. This is not
intended to be an apology. It could
happen again. "definitely"

Actually, I've enjoyed everyone's thoughts on this. It was something totally new to me, and it's kind of cool to read the different viewpoints since I've never studied tracks before.

Please tell me you haven't really been trapping for 40+ years and still can't tell the difference between a canine and a cat print.

Joy, Call Fish and Game and see if you can email the tracks to someone there for ID.
