Texican is right use what is there. I put in a post ans buried it 16 inches. Taped back in the rock and dirt I had taken out of the hole. I had to move that post and with a chain wrapped around it and attached to a backhoe bucket it did not move. Use cedar or Bois arc post if you can get them.

Sorry y'all, thought you all had read my other post.....My dad "salvaged" 1800 linear feet of 3-rail oak board fence from a neighbor that was switching over to vinyl.

There are over 250 TREATED 4x4 posts as well as the 16' oak boards. (and a couple of gates, woohoo!).

I will have 2-4 horses on the property, all of which respect wood-board with a strand of electric at the top.

The property is currently moderately wooded, but the seller has agreed to clear about 50% (leaving the big trees I have already marked to save). The soil is rich, virgin black earth; pretty dense when wet, clay at about 16" down or so. The seller clears properly; he gets the roots and all with his excavator.
