Well as for the smell question, did your hubby buy ultra-low-sulpher diesel? That's what is being sold now, not sure about for big rigs but for automotive diesel anyway. Heating fuel is high sulpher fuel so that may be the smell you are referring to.

Yesterday I fueled the boss' pickup with on-road, taxed, clear diesel fuel , I managed to spill some on my shoe, it smelled all day long just like the red dyed , untaxed fuel that we use in the equipment. It smells no matter which color it is....
