Good idea... your dogs are a "pack" against a single intruder, they will gang up and they will kill the other dog, especially if they're not socialized. And then you will have a lawsuit on your hands.

I don't want them having any scrapes in life. they may be a bit 'different', but they are my loves. and you never know when another animal might put up a GREAT fight. no...not going there.

the elderly man down the road lets his dog run loose. I'm a dog lover, so I understand how thrilling this is for a dog tied to a doghouse on a 6' chain. but...with all the woods, the dog comes to my place. now..I KNOW already that I probably should have better control over my dogs that are both extremely territorial. but...still...my dogs know that dog is out there, and they get so worked up that they turn on each other and fight. (ever break up a dog fight? NOT pretty) I've had one vet bill for a booboo....do NOT want another. so...after dealing with it for months...I march down the road. nobody in sight, so I put a note in his mailbox. it said..'PLEASE stop letting your dog run loose.' I explain the problem. ok...maybe it sounded snotty, but I was at my wit's end. he tells my hubby that he can prosecute me for putting it in his mailbox. something about tampering with US mail. I told him that I know all too well that sometimes our dogs get loose, but when mine do...I'm right behind them. if he wants his dog to have more freedom...fence is the answer. (I did say I sounded snotty) anyway..I like this man, so I was surprised by his tone. is this true? because I put a note in his mailbox...can I get in trouble????

you have a place...don't see the neighbors....yet sometimes there is still problems. ugh.
Hi mamita;
I doubt very seriously that the local postmaster would make a federal case out of it. If you hear from him just explain the situation as succintly as you did here. You were at your wits end. From here on out send the grumpy old fart a certified letter.
I'd be tempted to complain to the local SPCA about the 6' chain. That sounds inhumane to me. The dog should at least have a runner line.
Don't let the neighbor scare you.
Calming one another's fears and sharing burdens is part of why we are here.
Have a good evening and try not to worry.

Mamita, if you are in an area populated by wildlife, especially deer, you could call the game commission as someone mentioned earlier. Pennsylvania does have a law on it...

Sec. 2381. Dogs pursuing, injuring or killing game or wildlife.

Except as otherwise provided in this title or by commission regulation, it is unlawful for any person controlling or harboring a dog to permit the dog to chase, pursue, follow upon the track of, injure or kill any game or wildlife at any time.

Found here.. http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/v...&q=151105#2381

If there is a risk of the dog going after game, better to turn the guy in than to let the hunters catch the dog out. Deer hunters will shoot dogs running loose. Rifle season is fast approaching.

I went through my neighbors dog coming over and killing my poultry. Tried catching him- no go. Tried banging on neighbors door several times (twice when dog was on highway) and then talking to neighbor about concern for his dog. I agree with the person that says urban people moving out to the country think they can let thier dogs run- he did. There was no excuse- there was a kennel there on a cement pad with dog house from the previous owner (who was a good neighbor). After the dog killed one of my chickens and drug it off the property and another neighbor saw it and told me, I handed him a bill for $50 for the chicken. He paid it but a few months later it was back. I tried catching the dog to take it to the shelter. Could not get it. I do not own a gun- but the kids had an airsoft rifle. I shot him with that, but he would come back. I tried banging on the neighbors door- he did not answer. Finally took pictures and called the sherriff. By that time the dog was home in the house- but I had the photos of him on my property with a date stamp. The sherriff told him about the fines and the dog never returned. BUT he did retaliate by calling the sherriff when one of my chickens followed my duck which he fed off his deck over- and pecked his pit bull. I decided to get rid of the chickens (and ducks after owls ate most of them from being penned up) until I could afford to build covered runs rather than be fined. I have chickens and turkeys now- the turkeys do range but stay home. The chickens will be in the covered runs I made. My next purchase is goats...with a male...with pen as close to his property as I can get it so the odor drifts over when he is in rut....and a few guineas for good measure
