We don't get cable out here and won't pay for Dish. Too expensive and too many channels that we'd never watch. We got 4 or 5 channels before we got the converter box and now we get 11. When we first hooked it up we got nothing , but once we ran the auto channel find thingy on the TV and then did the channel search on the converter box again, we got more channels than before and they are clear as can be . Eleven channels is more than enough for us.

We don't have kids and just mute the commercials, so I don't worry about that stuff.

I, personally could do without TV and not miss it but the DW is a soap junkie. AMC, OLTL and GH for 30+ years. I find it curious that no here has mentioned the soaps. Do you'all just not watch them or are they your dirty little secret.....LOL

We've not had cable for at least 10 years. We don't get any local channels either. We do watch movies we rent, but sometimes go weeks before we see one we're interested in. I don't miss the tv in the least....but as for internet, I might have some withdrawals.

Won't they be exposed to that in all other aspects of their life such as when they visit friends or just a trip to the pharmacy? I would think that if someone is shielded from something, they are more curious about it in the long run. I know I did some pretty bizarre stuff as a kid and I turned out ok.
There is a huge difference between seeing something on the shelf at the pharmacy and listening to it advertised over and over. Repetion of the garbage is more the issue than simple exposure.

we just did the same thing, its not been long but i am loving it. i just hated shelling out the money for nothing. we signed up for netflix, and i found a few of those internet places to watch things sometimes. now i see the family is *doing* stuff instead of being lumps on the couch. and if they are in need of entertainment and the new movie hasn't come yet, they go online and look up stuff! and not only them, but i stopped wasting time during the day as well. yup, good move.

Hi All, I am 'new' to Homestead Forums (but actually have lurked for a while, enjoying all the info shared.)

I just recently decided to cancel the DirecTV and replace it with a Netflicks subscription, due to the positive experiences shared here. Maybe it was a different thread but anyway...

I am saving about $50 a month now, with the switch. I am pleased!

I have direct tv, and I wouldn't turn it off unless I had to for financial reasons. It's just DH and I, and we only watch BYU-TV, History channels, Discovery channel, BIO, A&E, and FOX news. My young grandchildren sometimes watch it when they are over, but they are only allowed certain shows, like Wilbur, Wordworld, and the Wiggles. Only educational shows. When my children were home, we had certain rules, similar to the rules we had for the internet about who got to use it when and what they viewed. We enforced the rules and it worked and still works well. Now if we had problems financially, it would be one of the first luxuries to go.

We called the dish guy when we moved here, and then learned he'd have to put the dish in our field and run the cable across our drive and creek... we just said no thanks. So we haven't had television/cable in 3.5 years.

DH can watch anything he wants on the internet and the only thing I miss is Denise Austin's workouts. So much more varied and convenient (and less expensive) than a gym membership!

We have amassed a substantial DVD collection and really enjoy movies. You can control what you watch better, no commercials, and the "making of" and other extras are usually pretty interesting.

We go "out" to the movies once every year or two. It's just too expensive and time consuming (1:15 drive each way) to do it very often. We'd rather spend the money on a DVD and save the time.

your dw and my mom would get along great....my mom watches those same soaps....we alwasy had to be home at 1 o'clock so she could watch her soaps from 1-4. My mom will talk to me like I watch them...during a conversation she'll say *oh my, did you see Sally is getting divorced and Ann is pregnant?!* I'll say, *Who's sally? Who's Ann?* Her reply *You know, John's wife on General Hospital* Good grief!!! I don't know how many times we have had a conversation and I am racking my brain trying to think which cousin she's talking about and here it's some character on a soap opera LOL!!

Just my .02
I have never paid to watch TV.
Had a friend that made a sattelite receiver out of some coffee cans. It was amazing the shows he got from around the world. I will not pay for the box. Just read the newspaper and not limit it to one from the same area. Right now when we do watch TV we were getting about seven stations. Fox bought NBC and that programming was lame and now it is not even on the air around here. You will save some good $$$. Turn it off, we are.

Waaayyyy back when (1991 (I think (was that really 18 years ago already ?!??!?))) -- my sophomore year of college, I was suffering from time mangement issues. Too darned much going on at once. I decided to nix both the cable *and* the TV. Best decision I ever made. I packed the TV up in a box, taped it up to heck and back to make it difficult to pull out again (temptations, y'know) put it on the bottom of a stack of boxes in the back of a closet and forgot about it for 3 years.

Best.
Darned.
Thing.
I.
Ever.
Did.

Time management issues went away. 9 consecutive quarters on the Dean's List, graduated with honors, and plenty of spare leisure time. It's amazing how much time is wasted on the TV.

I have no idea why I ever dragged it out again after graduation, and now we've got two of 'em in the house.

Honestly, these days the TV isn't such a timewaster. It's this darned internet I can't seem to get rid of <grin>.
