I live in the middle of an open 100-acre field, there are no trees ("woods")within a mile of me... only sparse tree lines (and they're 1/4 mile away, on other peoples' property).

DH told me that it's possible that it's not "their" animal (they've kept friends' animals there before). They might not want to have anything to do with it. Looks like I'm going to have to call the sheriff or local police or something later this morning. The thing is swelling up huge and there's flies all over it. I don't want to touch it. I have someone coming over this morning to look at a horse and trailer I have for sale... lovely!

dead goat/sheep

Should we start placing bets on how long it will lay there? Sounds like they won't move it anytime soon!

Since you are expecting customers, you might have to (ick) offer your help.

There is no justice.

I suppose it's possible, Whinny, that it isn't their animal, but don't you think they would have said something about it by now if it wasn't theirs?

I would think the sheriff could offer some advice if nothing else. I mean, somebody has to know what to do with, for example, a large animal that dies in the middle of the roadway. The troopers here and in Minnesota carry a shovel in the trunk for scooping dead skunks and such off the road.

Some years back I had a neighbor with a birch tree that was dropping limbs on my roof, threatening to put a hole in my roof. I knocked on the door and suggested that "since the tree was on the property line" (it wasn't, it was his tree) that we should agree on how the tree was taken care of before it damages my roof. I could tell by his face that he wanted nothing to do with removing the tree or paying for the work, so when I told him that my family and I would take the tree down and clean it up but we just needed to drop it in his yard, he agreed to it. When the day came for the actual work, I knocked on his door to tell him we were going to get started but he would not answer. We could see the curtains move on occasion, his car was there, and I know they were watching us. They were afraid they might be asked to help somehow....

Anyway, I am sure these people don't really want the animal there, too. My opinion is that they don't want to/ don't know how to deal with it... and considering your situation with putting your house on the market.... Well, maybe if the sheriff can't help, the best thing to do is talk to the neighbors (if they will answer the door!) and just deal with the dead animal problem together or by yourself; and with no talk about whose fault or responsibility it is. It is in your best interest to make that dead critter go away... however it is done. Even if they won't talk to you about it, I don't think they would make an issue of you taking a dead animal off of their property.

Good luck!

IT'S NOT THERE ANYMORE! Hooray! (At least, I do not see it sitting where it was, between the driveway and livestock pen).

Today is our weekly trash pick-up. There are 3 garbage cans out at the end of their driveway instead of the usual 2.

Most places have carcass removal requirements. If they hadn't removed it, you could have contacted sheriff or animal control and asked them to make them dispose of it properly.

Glad that's over for you, and good luck with selling your place!

Glad it's turned out well for you. Just keep it in mind if there is ever a next time the 3 SSS shoot shovel and SHHHH. Or there is always the wood chipper. I kid, have a great night.
