Well, this method seems to work a lot better for me than the traditional one -OR- the starting method described in the wood furnace book. I did find that I had to use a little more crumpled newspaper, tucked in and around the larger logs, but once I lit the paper, the fire took off, stayed burning and didn't collapse!

DH isn't so convinced, but it definitely works for me.

I lay paper, small wood, then bigger wood--then shave some paraffin for the top--worked for 60 years.
