My freezer just died so I'm going to be in the market for a new one. If I don't I'm not going to have a place to store venison and turkey in a few weeks.

It was well over 20 years old and probably isn't worth fixing. I don't want to spend 100 bucks or more on a 25 year old freezer.

I agree with Sheripoms,,I am buying up all the canning supplies I can,,at auctions and rummage sales, I do need a pressure canner tho..and feel I should get a new one..not used,,so thats on my xmas list..then I'll do meats etc..we have 3 freezers..we share with our kids what ever is in them..they put some meats in..pheasant season and deer seasons are coming..so we'll fill up..and maybe I can can some of that also later on..I canned more this yr. than ever before, its been fun..I've raised all I canned..a bigger garden next year, more for us and Farmers Market..plus I'd like to find a commercial kitchen to rent and can with for selling..We'll never starve,,living on the farm is definitely a plus.

You can can meats , you just need a pressure canner. You can put up meats in small amounts if ya want. I heard someone say they even used baby food jars for a little amount of stuff.

Well, the Sears.com site does have something odd going on. If you look at their chest freezers they have nothing between the 7.2cu/ft and the 19.7cu/ft models. Uprights seem to be more fully represented.

We just bought another freezer several weeks ago which is how I discovered the oddity on the Sears site. Fortunately we went to our local store and they had the 13 cu/ft model we wanted. We're steadily filling it up.

I lost 2 refridgerators because i used them outside in the barn... I am told the compressor oil thickens in the cold and it takes the motors out. I have a heated roome in the barn ... I keep it 45 degrees f during the winter and the fridge and freezer in there is just fine.

I bought my first freezer 2 months ago. Actually my son bought it for me as a mothers day/birthday/christmas gift. He's such a good boy!!! LOL. It is just shy of 10 cubic feet and I thought that would be plenty for my husband and I. It's already full! I don't worry too much about the power going out. It's a chest type so I'm guessing it should hold the cold even if it is opened a few times a week. The salesman said if we powered it with our generator for just an hour or so a day we should be able to maintain safe food temps. I hope he's right......

My experience during the Florida hurricane season has been that if I run the gen-set an hour and a half in the morning and the same in afternoon it will keep my freezer (15 cu/ft model at the time) hard frozen until time to run the gen-set the next day. This worked better than running it three hours once a day.

The weather would have to be rather coolish to keep the freezer hard frozen just running the gen-set for an hour a day.

A.T. Hagan, that's pretty much what they have in the stores too. Little bitty ones, great big ones and a whole selection of uprights.

I checked freezers at Sam's this morning. Price has gone up, $20 or $30 over what they were last week.
