Bears also like latex paint in the can.

Ted's right about the Husky -- you should put up a fence before you let it loose. The terrier should be okay once it's used to being there, as long as the other dog can't get loose to lead it astray.

Malamutes are no better. Most of the sled dog breeds have a strong hunting instinct and will, in particular, kill cats and any small livestock they come across, which would not endear you to your new neighbors! (I've heard that Samoyed's are safer with small stock, because they were used for herding reindeer, but haven't got any experience with them. I do have experience with the other sled breeds.)

You'd probably be wise to get a solar fence charger -- or a regular charger if you have power to the site -- and put up several strands of hot wire around your camp site. As long as it stays hot, it will deter bears. It will also keep the dogs in and safe. Just make sure the charger is well grounded in moist earth.

You ned a fence for the dogs. You can't leave them tied and leave, they are bait for coyotes and bears.

Atually, my dogs are quite the opposite. The Husky stays home except when led astray by the little terrier who will roam for miles and miles lol. She can travle amazing distances in a short time on those little legs!

Dirtyslinger,

Don't know where you live but here the coyotes don't go for big dogs on chains..they tend to go for the yappy small dogs. More portable. Dunno about the bears though. They're not a problem here and I've been checking out lots of sledding dog websites and most of their kennels are a chain set up with nary a fence in grizzly country! Most likely because the dogs will raise a ruckus and a bear doesn't want to argue with a pack of dogs.

Be careful where you take a bath too. We have an outside shower and the bear ate soap and conditioner but did not eat the shampoo. He just threw those bottles on the ground!
