Thats good, but here is something everyone can enjoy, uses 2 -10/22's, and might be just the ticket;

Another vote for the ruger 10/22. I'd be willing to put my little 10/22 carbine up against just about any other "out of the box" .22

However, I really liked my Henry lever action .22 It was not quite the tack drive the 10/22 is, but it was pretty good, and fun to shoot.

LOL. When I ws a kid my BIL took me deer hunting with him. He had a 30 30 and I had a bouble barrel 12 gauge with a slug in one barrel and some type of shot in the other. We didn't see anything all day and was walking back to the car and a quail jumped up to fly away. Ronnie yelled shoot it so I did.
Wrong barrel.
Ronnie picked at me for the longest of time about that. He said I was the only person he had ever seen that could kill, clean, cook, and eat a bird in one shot, LOL.
That is about what that .50 caliber would do to a deer in short order.

Wink

I find a brush hog or a lawnmower effective.

Don't want to get it out and out of the case right now, so I can't remember the number, but it is a Remington Pump action .22 (572, I think)with a 3 x 9 scope. Real tack driver, just don't use it as often. I think the Ruger 10-22's are more fun.

I visited with a rancher today who has lots of ground squirrels. As usual, he begged me to come shoot some. He said some friends came out a week ago and went to a dry corner of his hayfield where the grass is eaten down. They sat in one place and shot two and a half of those 550 round bulk boxes of 22s, in a couple of hours.

That is one thing to keep in mind for ground squirrel shooting, you will be reloading many times. Pulling the tube out of a tubular mag gets old. We have 30 round mags for the 10-22 so you can get serious about shooting.

A friend of mine was shooting AT crows in his corn that was just a little out of range. He said he would shoot and they would just jump around or fly to a tree and LAUGH at him. He said thats alright you all just keep eating and I'll be back. Went to the sportshop and bought a Browning A-bolt .17 cal and went back and got setup. After a while one pitched about 150 yards and he nailed him. Then grabbed his 12 ga and run down there and set down about 40 yards from the dead crow, and as all that crows family and friends were diving and circling to find out what was wrong with the crow, he eliminated about half of them before they decided to dine elsewhere. In my opinion that was an expensive one shot but, how much corn would them crows have pulled up? lol Eddie

Yeah they've been making that little pump action .22 for a lot of years. Since the mid 50s I think. I grew up hunting squirrels and rabbits with one of those. Nice thing about them is that you can shoot .22 Long Rifle, .22 Long and .22 Short from them. You can even load all three in the same magazine if you wanted to for some reason. It was quite accurate as I recall.

They also made a sister gun the 552 Speedmaster. It was more or less a semi auto of the same gun with the same capability of shooting .22 Long Rifle, .22 Long and .22 Short. I'm not sure you can even buy .22 Longs anymore. I remember shooting up a few ancient boxes my dad had when i was a kid but I haven't seen any in years.

I've always liked the look of them and since I had one growing up I'd kinda like to have a matched set of a 572 and 552 with nice wood and high gloss metalwork etc.

The CZ will routinely group better than anything else except a dedicated target rifle, at a lot less price. Some CZ's will do better than some target rifles. Of course, you can get lucky with something else too, and you might find some other rifle that will group better than some CZ, but it's not likely.

Rimfire's are notoriously picky about which ammo they like, and two firearms with consecutive serial numbers will not necessarily give of their best with the same ammo. Once purchased, you should do some test firing with boxes of fifty of different brands and types, until you find exactly with which ammo your particular little finicky fussbucket will deign to work.

A .22 rimfire has plenty of energy at 100 yards. I've killed kangaroos at more than that distance with a .22LR, and that's equivalent to a deer. Mind you, it was vermin eradication rather than a sporting hunt, and I was a kid at the time. It's not what you'd use on big game as a sporting proposition, and even so shot placement was vital. Today I'd chase them off, then come back tomorrow with a more suitable firearm (which was not an available option to save our crops then).

.22 Long Rifle has a fairly sharp drop past 75 yards. On small game you need to know the trajectory and estimate the distance real well. If you've sighted for a maximum point-blank range of 75 yards, it could drop almost 5" at 100. Alternatively, zero at 100 and it could be 3" high at 50.

There's another option. Try one of the .17 rimfires. .17HMR, or .17 Mach 2. Take a look at http://www.shootingtimes.com/ammunition/17M2/ for info. They are lighter bullets at higher velocities than the .22 rimfire, but flatter trajectory and longer range.

I really like the 10/22, but to be fully honest any 95.00 used 22 lr at your local gunshop will do what you want......okay, there is an acception.....those little phinox 22 handguns can't hit the broad side of a barn from 10 ft.

I have always liked the old long barreled, bolt action, iron sighted .22's. My favorite for a long time was my Mossberg model 341. Years ago I purchased my first CZ.......the 452 LUX, it took over as my favorite. Then I added the CZ 452 Amercian with the Mueller scope, really like the combo. A few more photos, first one is the Mossberg (bottom) and the CZ 452 LUX (top).
