Around here it is actually the Council of Governments that does the 911 address, and who you have to call to get an address, with or without a house on the property.

I called them, the 911 address guy called me back, asked some questions about the location, pulled up a satillite photo, asked me how much work all my cross fencing had been. I had done the clearing for the cross fencing less than six months before I made the call, so his photos were VERY up to date.

Here its The post office. You can put up a mailbox anywhere along the Rural Route and they will give it a number......It Doesnt even have to be on your property!
So if you want lots of sale cupons just put up a few mail boxes, or if you want the free paper that goes to the neighboring town just stick a box alongside the road over there.

When we bought our property 17 years ago it was the USPS that gave us the address. They had to figure it out since it was an 111 acre farm that was broken down into 4 separate parcels, ours being the smallest at 20.97 acres...

I used a PO Box over 15 years with the rental price going up about about every two years. I liked the security that a PO Box offered but eventually gave it up due to the high rental rate.

The local PO even remodeled back in the mid 1980s in order to add more boxes as there is such demand. At times, locally, there is a waiting list for those wanting to rent one so supply and demand can help set the high rental fee.

Properties get an address when they build a structure around here however that still won't get mail service. Almost everyone except some folks living in one of three towns on the island get their mail via a post office box. If your neighbors get mail, then you will probably also be on the route after you figure out your address but if they have to go to town or to a bank of postal boxes to get their mail then more than likely you will too.

County Assessor's office will be able to give you a 911 address.

I bought a few acres in West Central Ohio three years ago. The health department assigned a number, while I was standing there asking for one. She looked at the numbers on neighboring homes, and randomly chose a number. Said "how's this sound?". I've used that number ever since so I hope it is right!!!

I've never put up a mailbox or anything, btw.

I thought so too but I didn't have to. Before I built my house I called the postmaster and they sent someone out to see where I was and to decide what my box number should be and if the mailbox would be acceptable to the carrier where I'd placed it. Everything was copacetic and they called me and told me what my address would be. And yes I did mail myself a piece of mail just for kicks and even sent myself some magazine subscriptions before I even moved back. I'm easily amused you see.

As far as a 911 address we don't have those here. All the county wanted to know was where I wanted the culvert for my driveway. Also told the assessor that I had a house on the property now so he could make the necessary changes to the taxes and that was only because I didn't want to get behind and get some outrageously high tax bill a year or two down the line. Didn't need any sort of inspections or permits for anything since I was building in the country.

for bare land we would go to the township and request a fire number which is free. The fire number is basically your address.

Finally got the address. Had to go to the County "Planning Department." They had me fill out a 2-page application, on which I had to write the tax ID number and our names. Then I had to draw a map showing any neighbors and their addresses. All done.

Thanks for all your ideas!

And when you or a visitor has an accident or a heart attack the ambulance finds you how?

My son owns a lot located out in the country back in the woods at the end of a narrow little sand road. Went to the post office and told the lady where it was she said O.K. and gave a number for it. Oh yeah there is an old out house sitting on the property.LOL! Very handy when we go camping.

on our raw land, all we had to do was make a visit to the PO and fill our a card with the names of who will be getting mail. Left with a new address and specs for how and where they wanted the mailbox mounted

E-911 gives you the address here, but only when a home is built. While we were building, we used what we thought would be the address for our deliveries. Come to find out since we were so far off the main road, we had to pick our own street name - which is our driveway and not use the road in front of our property.

Holy cow!

Mine was a five minute call to the county Assesor with the legal.
"Where are you putting the house?"
"Back in the NW corner."

"You'll access from county road 15?"
"Yep."

"Okay, your address is 12345 CR15"
