That's a good tip, Mine is fine but I can see what you mean. I pulled an old filter apart just to see how dirty it was and had to pull that plate off. As I said I'm not "making" bio diesel just burning pure waste restaurant vegetable oil.

I was looking at some replacement water filter cartridges I had and the plain ones were 20 microns. The water filter type housing with a 3/4" inlet might be just the ticket and I'm sure there are some finer filter elements. I think I'm going to mount a tank above a 55gal barrel and let it gravity feed/filter the oil. If i can dump 4-5 gals in at a time that would work. Then just hand pump it out of the barrel.
