DH and I live in Russellville. He's a cabinet maker and I'm a barefoot trimmer (it's a horse thing!). We have horses, dogs, cats, in-laws cows, and working on chickens. We raise a garden every year and can, can, can! We also sell hay and if we have any free time, we do a lot of porch sitting...

Taylorsville, KY. Spencer County. My parents have ~40 acres that they have not been working. I just came back a couple weeks ago and will be putting up goats, chickens and food crops for family members and the animals. Eventually I expect to be able to make a little cash from the farm, but for the near term I'm just shooting on 90% of all our food needs. Profit can take a back seat for the time being.
The farm is on a river side, so there is flooding in the spring. About half the property is a forested hillside, while the other half is fairly level flood plain.

Hey All,
It's been a while since I posted.
I'm in Berea, Madison County, at the foothills of the Daniel Boone National Forest.
We have 4 slightly sloped acres that we bought two years ago. I'm in the process of turning about 1 3/4 acres into garden beds and I'm putting berry patches along the property lines. We just built a barn -- mostly to house the tractor at this point. I'm not sure what animals we'll add yet. I hope to have chickens next year.

Thanks
For those KY folks raising chickens, how well do you insulate your coops? I've been out of KY for about 10 years, so I forget how winter is down here. I am currently laying out a fixed coop. I'm trying to figure out if a non-insulated, but draft free enclosed coop is enough.

Swell! Still a bit more brush clearing in the area of the coop, but hope to get started building within a week. Waiting on possible free lumber and tin roof from a tornado hit barn.

Thanks for the tour. My daughter and family live in Louisville. And we have friends who live outside of Carlisle. A family by the name of Sallee. They have a beautiful 4o acres there and some of their kids have homes on the property as well. Neat country.

I live between Hopkinsville and Fairview Kentucky. I have the old family farm....I rent most of the farmland to a local farmer because I don't have the equipment any more to farm it, but I still have a few acres up near the house for goats and chickens and guineas.
I have a garden and usually can most of the summer. Our old house needs a lot of repair and we are trying, but ohhhhhhhhhhhh. I live with saws and lumber and insulation all over the place!
Mikesmate, we live very close to you if you live in Russellville.

When you emailed me where you were moving it did not dawn on me that you would be 20 minutes down the street. For some reason I thought you were moving to land between the lakes, not lake beshear!!! Just tell me when to come over for coffee!! I will make a cherry cruch cake!

We are in Hart County. we raise Dexters, have a couple of goats and sheep, a few chickens, geese and turkeys. I am glad to see there are so many here from Kentucky. Maybe we ought to arrange a get together, whatyou say?

Technically we are in Lincoln county but our property actually borders 3 different counties! We have chickens, geese, rabbits, Jerserys, goats & horses not to mention a garden & orchard. Although we just planted the orchard last year so it will be a bit before we will be enjoying that bounty!

Central Kentucky
We are still here. We are way out in the country west of Elizabethtown. We have Miniature horses, ponies, foals, a Jenny, Border Collies, Boer goats, some sheep, Pigs, feeder pigs, Golden Comet chickens and big white rabbits. We always have a large garden. We only have 12 acres but it's all grass and seems like a big 12 acres to us. Cook and heat with a wood cookstove, no A/C, no heat pump. Hang our clothes out to dry. We do allot of trading. We mow our 12 acres of pasture with 2 riding mowers...we sold the big tractor, and it's so much cheaper on gas and allot of fun. Haven't posted in a while, but still here.

Springledge-Yes! We are fairly close, small world! Do you live close to the Fairview Auction? I go to the Amish salvage store (The Penny Saver) about 1-2 a month. Do you ever shop there?

We're in north Metcalfe County, Sulphur Well, home of the Lighthouse Restaurant!
We have 46 acres and raise blueberries, (yum!) garlic, rhubarb and asparagus. We retired from Florida and moved here 6 years ago.... Love it! Also have cows, sheep, chickens, turkeys, guineas.
Sell some stuff off the farm, alot at the market day in Glasgow. We bake breads, make jellies and jams, BBQ sauce, farm eggs, etc in our home based kitchen. All us Kentuckians are lucky with how easy it is to start your own farm based business! PM for more info on how we got started, but we make an extra $400 average in 4 hours on Saturday when we take our stuff to the market.
Life here is good!

Hey Cindy and luvrulz, you're my nearest neighbors so far. I'm in Taylorsville. If you guys are in the market to sell or trade some goats or chickens, I'll be looking to buy soon.

Hey Tom,
You are above Louisville, right? Go down there to Shepherdsville to the swapmeet on Saturday mornings, there are lots of chickens and stuff there. It is a good place.
