I think all most of us on a homesteading board feel the way you do about moving into town (we did already) or living with kin.

What we are saying is this: the choice is to make these kind of lifestyle changes or walk into that snowbank. There is NOT the third choice of the gubmint subsidizing your desire to live independently in the country. Nor is it the responsibility of corporations to price their products so you can continue your lifestyle.

At some point we may have to lay aside our feelings and preferences and deal with reality.
