LOL! Around here people would leave the eggs and steal the money box! Nail it to the underside of the table with a slot to put the money thru.

Sorry, homebody, but that sure sounds like a 'defeatist' attitude to me. Didn't you read the prior postings about building up a customer base first?

About like deer hunting. You can set up in a stand and hope the deer come to you or go out hunting for them.

If they have eggs or can buy them cheaper than yours.

Learn to eat eggs or haul them were eggs are higher or now one can get them.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I have a large sign that I hangs from the mailbox that says "Eggs $2.00" I live on a very busy road and I have given out "Samples" before, but they always want more free samples, they don't want hand over any money to actually buy my eggs. There is no one in the neighbore hood that is selling eggs and we don't have a health food store. I try to educate people abouth the benefits of free range eggs compare to supermarket eggs. I'll try again and give it time. I'm just disappointed that with all the talk about buying locally and supporting small family farming, that people would rather still by their eggs at the supermarket.

You have to keep at it. Word of mouth takes time. I must have had eighteen dozen eggs in the fridge before sales finally started to take off. There are networks out there that are waiting to be discovered and when you do they'll turn into major customers.

It has taught me however to expand the flock slowly. The wife gets grumpy when she can't put anything in the fridge for the eggs taking up all of the space.

DO NOT do this. You can be fined. You probably won't be but all it takes is the mail carrier turning a flyer in. This happened to some lawn care people around here.
you can get around this by taping a flyer to the side of their mailbox or rubberbanding to a doorknob

This can get you arrested for trespassing. The grocery store parking lot is private property and belongs to the store. This would be no different than setting up a tailgate bar-b-que operation in a resturant parking lot and hijacking their customers.
Yep and to get around this don't do the actual selling at the grocery store only hang a flyer in your car window with a contact number for folks to call you to buy eggs
P.S. I would sell at $1.75 till you are releived of your excess and call it an intruductory price letting folks know that the reg price is $2

good luck on the egg selling

Store bought eggs are cheaper and the egg season is comming up, and eggs will be cheaper bu the dozen.

Run A Special For A while.

Buy one dozen, and get 1/2 dozen free ! ! !

If there taste buds change after eating these eggs they might be back for the regular price by the dozen.

If not you could loose all of your eggs, even if you only get the cost of feed back for now. Raise prices later when they are hookes and tell there friends.

DOn't forget to post on craigslist - I don't want to go driving around the country looking for people who sell eggs, meat, etc. - I'll just see on craigslist if someone posts. DOn't forget the people who live in the city and don't know where to go to find someone who sells fresh eggs

The price seems kinda high to me but thats just here.
Your sign is missing some important things
1 A picture of a chicken or a basket of eggs.
2 The price should be on a hanger sign so it looks like it can be changed.
3 Once in a while change the price sign for a "Sold out reservations only today" sign.
4 "Sales from 8am to 6 pm at the side door."
5 "Fresh"
6"Free Range"
7 "SHELLY"S
8"call 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX"

With proper postage on them of course since it would otherwise be illegal. The postal service has a right to collect them from the mailboxes and charge you postage on them.

When it appears to be a full mass mailing only the first and last fliers are removed and charges will be made for all of the boxes shown in records for that segment of the route.

No keys, money, etc. is to be placed in mailboxes other than mail.

Most of the towns in my area hold weekly farmers markets all summer long. Check to see if they do so in your area, then set up a stand and sell your eggs there and then. Be sure to have a sign explaining the benefits of free range eggs, and be prepared to answer questions from the city slickers like "how old are the eggs" and "how do I know they aren't fertilized?" Include a flyer with each sale that has your your address and phone number so customers can buy direct from you later on.

I've sold eggs off and on through the past 10 years we've lived here. I had one couple that wanted to come by between 9-10 every Friday am when she had her hair done in town. For 2 dozen at $1 each. Did this for 6-7 months and then they just stopped and didn't see them again. I gave up Fri am garage sales for that $2. It is not worth it to me-dealing with the public who act as though you're cheating them. My tolerance level is 0. I do have my pets and they give me much pleasure and satisfaction. I have the added joy of the moms with their baby chicks. I have no interest in building sales and trying to educate people about the benefits of free-range, non-medicated,etc. I lowered my feed bill cost my preferred way and others can do what they want.

flyer

You can't put a flyer in mailboxes but around here, people put them in the newspaper boxes.

Same here. Funny how some of us nice country folk can be stand-offish when it comes to money.

Put a price on your sign: Fresh Eggs 1.75/Doz., or something of that nature.

Clove
I don't know where the OP is from but according to our Missouri Egg Laws unless we are usda inspected, graded and licensed we are NOT allowed to advertise the price of our eggs...this includes on a sign in your yard and flyers as well as on craigslist or localharvest. I have noticed many people do have the price on their yard signs and it probably doesn't get investigated much...but that is still the law.

Maybe offer on Freecycle - buy 1 get 1 free or something like that.
At least the extras will be gone and some may be return customers later. Be sure and have contact info on cartons.

Talk about chickens everywhere you go. Doctor's office, church, post office, work, store, etc.

Post flyers everywhere you can post them. (library, post office, feed store, etc.)

Our pullets won't even start laying until July and we already have customers. Doctors office and our mail lady! In the mean time I wih I knew of someone near by selling eggs so we didn't have to eat those nasty store eggs anymore.

Just keep trying.

I don't know if anyone else uses this phrase, but be careful, I don't believe you can use the words "Farm Fresh Eggs" in many states because that's a specific USDA term that means they have been graded (by a certified egg producer) at grade A or better. (that's off the top of my head, and I know a lot of people disregard this, so take it as a "just sayin' " thing.)
