DON'T use elmers to make the paper stick better either! LOL My mom wanted me to steam loose some paper and sand the wall down smooth behind it. I told her she should have let me sand it BEFORE she put the paper up. (I offered and she was too impatient to get the paper up so as usual, she charged ahead and did it anyway.)

Just hire a couple of two year olds, they never seem to have any problem stripping wallpaper of their bedroom walls.
Some years ago I had just finished papering my bedroom and was busy putting everything away when my daughter proudly troted in with two full strips of paper she had peeled from the wall. I could have happily put her in the nearest orphanage.

The first time we walked into this house, I went into the kitchen, saw the wallpaper, and asked my DH "Gee, you think the snozzberries taste like snozzberries?" It's some serious Willy Wonka, retro, unidentifiable berry stuff. I can't wait to redo it!

The only people that will use wallpaper, are the ones that never have had to remove wallpaper. It feels like an endless job. It's been 20 years since I've done it, and the mere thought of it now brings back horrible memories.
My suggestion is that if you do use wallpaper, you better have lots of money so that when the time comes later, you can pay someone to remove it for you. And you will pay them handsomely, and it'll be worth every penny.
I wish I had some good remedy (secret) for removing wallpaper, but if I had it, I would've used it back when I needed it.

In our dining room, we found 4 layers of wallpaper followed by a layer of paint, then another layer of wall paper. Once we got to the original wall, we gained 25 sq feet in the room
Actually, we found the autograph of the first knucklehead who hung the original wallpaper. We now have the name of the person to hate!

I too am suffering with wallpaper removal. I have a hint or two..
-spray bottle with vinegar and water.. spray, wait, spray, wait, spray..
-take an old iron!! and run it over the walls until it stops hissing..
-Use a spackle knife type tool to easily peel huge strips off!!!!
It works wonders. Once I figured this trick out I did entire walls in mere moments..comparatively. PLus your house smells great. You can throw in some lavender or vanilla into the spray bottle too.

What you need is a gaget called a "Paper Tiger." It's sold at most paint and wallpaper stores. This gizmo quickly scores the old wallpaper with thousands of tiny holes. These holes allow the wallpaper remover solution....or steam...to penetrate underneath the paper and loosens the old glue. It's very easy to remove old wallpaper with one of these.

I love wallpaper, and I've had to remove some nasty stuff too. The paper tiger does work wonders.
In my current house, there were seven layers of wallpaper in one room. The corners were well rounded. The addition was built in 1925 and the first layer was probably put on soon after that.
We were making serious changes, so I pulled what I could down and the rest came off with the plaster.
Can you pick out the seven differnt patterns?

NOT WHEN YOU HAVE 5 LAYERS
one layer is a peice of cake after doing 5
and not all wall paper glues are created equaly they changed glues about half way thru my house one half of a room differrent properties to the glue than the other.
useing the garden sprayer with hot water and vinigar
and razor scrapers , they would tear up dry wall but this is 99 year old plaster

Wallpaper should be OUTLAWED!!!!! I am using the paper tiger and fabric softener and it is still not working. I am going to try going at it again. It has been a week and I think my blood pressure has gone down enough so that I don't have a heart attack or stroke when I try again. I was thinking about drinking heavily before I start!

LOL.. not a garden sprayer, honey! A little tiny hand held sprayer like your Windex comes in...
And not a razor scraper.. just a little putty knife.. no sharp edges.. And with the steam from the iron..if you wait a minute or two for the wall to "dry" before scraping it isn't too bad on plaster... not perfect, but not too bad. The heat and moisture just loosens the glue off the back of the paper.. I do not soak enough to go through the paper on to the wall.

that's dreadful. my parents moved into an old place that had 4 layers of different wallpaper and it took forever to get through it all.

I use a razor scraper and will never go back to any other scraper. It works worlds better than a putty knife or non-bladed scraper.

Think of it as Urban Archeology.
"...And here we have an unusual choice for wallpaper. What does that say about the mental capacity, or lack thereof, of our previous tenants?"
