I think I'm going to. I talked to him again this morning and they have Angus or polled Herefords-- which do I want??? Any thoughts on this?? He also said he can provide the milk to feed it from the farm so I shouldn't have to buy replacer.

I'd go for the Angus over the Hereford for flavour. If you can get an Angus/Jersey its even better!
If these guys are all or part beef, then you are getting a great deal.

I take it the calves are dairy/beef cross. It is a matter of personal preference my wife likes Angus I like Hereford. Our area is ideal fly country the Hereford (white face) does have eye problems caused by the flies. Yes you can treat for this my wife only uses natural remedies so stays away from the white face. The idea is to raise healthy calves with out any meds.

Good luck with your venture I expect to see a post in a few weeks with your new calf. Glenn

Thanks-- that's what I thought, but I've never ate Hereford to my knowledge. They're all beef and I'm pretty sure they are all purebred.

No, they're all beef. They have 2 farms-- one on each side of the road. One is beef cattle and the other is their dairy farm. The cattle are never together.

Hate to be different but.....
I'd take Herford over Angus for flavor any day of the week.....

Depending in your part of the country - most of the meat in the store is Angus.
There was a time around here, years ago, that people wouldn't have an Angus cow on their property. Nobody liked the looks of the beast or the flavor of the meat. They were REAL cheap, so "poor folk" turned to raising them. Now, pretty much everything around here is Angus.

Hmmmm.... the stores here charge more for Angus beef? They make a point to mark it as 100% Black Angus and they charge about $1 more a pound??

Yeah, but the difference between store-bought Angus beef and home-raised Angus beef is incalcuable. We bought a 12 year old "broken mouthed" old Angus cow. Skin and bones. Fattened her on a lot of grass and a little grain. OMG, that beef was incredible. Right up there with the flavour of Highland and Jersey who are the best I've ever had.
I'm sure Hereford is good too. I just prefer the Angus that I've had over the Hereford that I've had.
Its all good if its free, just ask for a healthy calf. All beef blood and you are getting a *great* deal!

Ah, thats just good marketing. I've had several different breeds raised on the feedlot and they taste pretty much the same. Good beef is the home-raised stuff. Really, just a healthy calf of any breed and your good to go if you raise it right.
They've made such a good job of talking up the Angus beef that no matter if its Angus or just black whatever, they sell better at the sale barn.
Jersey beats Angus hands down in my opinion, you just don't get as much as quick.
Angus is great beef, but its even better marketing!

From what I've read, Black Angus is a brand...not necessarily Angus beef. You might want to check it out.

I don't buy grocery store beef anyway. I buy mine from the local little store-- the owners parents raise and sell grass fed beef and she sells it in her store. It's a bit more expensive than grocery store beef, but it tastes soooo much better.

Actually - Black Angus is a BREED of bovine. It's also a high dollar steak house.
