Well I figured out a use for these bags. I'm going to cut them down to size and use them to line underneath the nest boxes. Our next boxes are made from milk crates and every once in a while I get a broken/half eaten egg in one of the boxes. What a mess that makes. This way the bag will catch the goo that goes through the straw and its easy clean up.

And Bonnie - I have to tell you I am ticked! We made our bi-monthly trip to Rural King on Friday night for feed and wouldn't you know it - the dang layer bags have gone down to 40lb bags at the same price!! Man I was ticked off. Do they really think we won't notice this? As I told dh, its just one more good reason to plant even more supplemental feed this year for the birds.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, anyway we re-fill the bags with grain at the feedstore. Saves me money and they don't end up in landfills.

Plastic feed bags needed

First, I would like say, I just found this forum not long ago and I am already addicted to it. It has the best info for anyone living on a homestead. When I found the thread about the plastic feed bags, I knew it was an answer to a prayer. We were trying to find a new project for our GA's at church. We were trying to find a project based on recycling and I think, making purses and hand bags out of the plastic feed bags would be a great project for them. Now, I need the feed bags. I have a couple but most of ours are just the plain feed sacks that bulk feed comes in. I think they would enjoy the more colorful ones. If any of you have extra ones we would greatly appreciate them. You can pm me or call me 1-601-947-4301. Again, I just have to say how much I enjoy this forum and how much we will appreciate any feed sacks.

I'm liking the rug idea. You could make them into long strips, braid and then sew them just like a rag rug. Then they could go outside to wipe off the barn mud and when they start breaking down they could just be tossed. We are saving our fuel pellet bags to use on a chicken tractor ala John Seymour.

Cara -

Can you expand on your use for the bags on the chicken tractor please?

It's kind of a low hoophouse made of flexible sticks with chicken wire and feed sacks over one end for the shelter. It's in The Self Sufficient Life and How to Live It.
