if you have an electric hackhammer, aluminum transmissions break up real easy, then you can pick out the non aluminum parts.

its work, and thats the pitfall.... is it more work than its worth?

the jack hammer is my uncles method, I'd rather take an air ratchet and impact gun and just buzz out all the bolts and disassemble and sort it as I go... its easier, makes less mess.

what brings you the money is making sure the alumin cases and parts are clean of any other metals. if thats all you have to do all day then its no loss, what else would you be doing right?

if the body is shot, I'd just nit pick it for sellables and crush the whole thing, whole cars have a good scrap price....

if its just in need of a new front end and the body is good, and the engine is sound...
I agree, overhaul the thing and keep it, its far cheaper than buying and fixing someone elses junk.

and dont get greedy.... its better to sell it all for a really low BIN price and get rid of it, than to keep relisitng it trying to get the "top" price.

just keep in mind.... the alternative was to send it all the the crusher for free.

and people will jump on underpriced BIN stuff like sharks.

make sure you list it as is no refunds or they will B&Moan you into a nervous breakdown.

as is... it worked when I packed it. No warranty.

For instance, the alternator, glass or an aluminum rim might be needed by someone immediately to get their van running again. These items would definately be "BIN" items if I were listing. If I owned a Windstar, and needed an alternator, I am not going to be waiting for a 7 day auction to end to purchase one. I would need one immediately.

On the other hand, you might do alright listing nonessential items like carpet, fenders, floor mats, as auctions.

A friend of mine has an 01 Gran Prix, and hit a curb, ruining the rim and tire. The JY wanted $275 for a used one. While there were about 10 auctions running for the rim for his Pontiac, he went with a rim listed as BIN for $119 plus shipping. He had his car back on the road 2 days later.

I personally would list every van part as a Buy It Now. People don't want to wait, and in most cases, can't wait for an auction to end.

And don't forget the carpet if it isn't too destroyed....this often sells well because no one ever lists it!

In fact if you ask the charity to give you a receipt they will only gie you a receipt with a description of the car and not a value on it.
Actually, that's incorrect.

The IRS revised the rules regarding automobile donations a few years ago. You, the donor, have donated nothing until the car you donated is sold at auction, and you are then provided a receipt for the amount it sold at auction. That, and only that, is the amount you are legally allowed to claim as a deduction for the donation.

After looking at Ebay for 95 Windstar parts, there are quite a few parts listed and very few with any bids.

I will not sell it as a whole van as I am worried that someone will buy it cheap for their kid and the front end will come flying apart.

I will pull the parts off that have some value (converter, etc) and scrap the rest.

As always, thanks to all for your help and ideas.
