*I* say it's a junker, DH says it's a "project car."

You tell me what YOU think it is.

How many of you have a junk car on your property? - Homesteading Questions

Just for clarification, it's vintage 1972, it did actually run when we acquired it, we have had it since 1997 and had it towed on flatbeds to new homes twice.

None, no, never! That is one of my peeves! We hauled junk from here for months when we bought this place and have no plans of dragging more in. We have three neighbors on this road that think they are running a junk yard. Their close neighbors are bothered with snakes, rats and misquitos from them. They also have piles of tires. We have a farm truck that we keep out of sight when not in use and use it around the farm. Scrap is going high here too and for the life of my I can't understand why these folks don't cash in. Our home is old but we try to keep it looking nice. Sorry, but you asked. Jklady

Obviously, it is his project! At least it appears to be out of sight. We women have projects too. Mine are unfinished sewing, craft work, etc. Jklady

Unfortunately yes. About 4 give or take. The is a pile of cars that is all mashed together and I'm not sure exactly how many there are. Another is something like half of an old impala. There is also half of an old utility truck in the weeds.

I'm trying to get them and all of the other metal trash gathered into one spot so I can haul it off to the scrapyard but it is taking time. I could strangle the individual who allowed all the trash to be hauled in here. It was a family member who is dead now so no strangling can be done unfortunately. It'll take me years to haul all of the trash out of here since it wasn't dumped in one spot. A car here, a car part there an old appliance somewhere else. Just scattered all over. That and just straight garbage like can and bottles. Every time I go through the woods I'm bringing home a load of cans and bottles.

We recently purchased a piece of property where the owner said he would have it cleaned up before closing. well the freezing rain then the freeze came and frooze everything in. With the property came 4 cars, 1 pickup, a f500 dump truck, schoolbus,Van with working wheelchair lift, and a honda 750 chopper. Also I estimate at least 5 tons of clean scrap metal. Also found about 50 lbs. of clean copper. He told me the dump truck runs. Been cleaning out the buildings and finding useful items. Looking forward to spring to clean this mess up.

Hey there Edayna;
I agree with your hubby. That van IS a CLASSIC. i know of people who restore those vans. They are highly sought after. I'd love to own one!
The gen x calls them "hippie Vans".

I have a couple old cars, but the only "JUNK" one I have is an old Dodge pickup that belongs to my nephew. Of course, even a NEW Dodge is junk.......

Around here if you have an "unregistered vehicle" on your property it will take a week or less before the Township sends you a letter. The letter advises you to register the vehicle or get it off your property. If you don't comply you will wind up in court.

If it is in a garage you are O.K. If it isn't in the open where people can not see it, you maybe O.K. that is unless someone complains. Been there, done that. It took three days without license plates on my car that was "For Sale" and still had time on my registration. I called the Township but they wouldn't tell me who complained. I am pretty sure who it was. She was the local trouble maker. She made a father take down a small tree house he built for his kids to play in. Shameful person.

We have a neighbor a mile away that keeps several old school buses. He uses them to store sacks of grain. I'm sure he got them cheaper than building a barn or shed.

HEY NOW. MEOW. I LOVE my 03 Dodge quad cab. It runs like a dream, and has plenty of room for my 4 kids and dh.

As far as potential junkers, not really. We have a 1995 Chevy with 300K miles on it that just needs a shift cable (I hope) or a transmission at worst. It does not have tags so it sits there. We have a 1987 GMC 3/4 conversion van that we pulled the alternator out of to fix the 1990 Chevy p/u since it gets better mileage than the van, and the van is used for summer pursuits.

My father gave me a 1992 Ford F150 a few years ago. It came from a big construction company in the Chicago area where it never left the job site. We are talking four different bald tires, cracked windshield, drivers door doesn't open from the inside, back window missing, no tailgate, transmission cooler disconnected etc.... extremely poor brakes (like next to none). I think he paid $25. When he retired from the company he was able to keep his company truck which is in good condition. I got the one for the general labourers which should have been sent to the crusher.

We were using it as a farm truck for hauling sheep the 1 mile to the butcher, until the power steering went out. Now only I drive it VERY rarely. Maybe this summer I will have time to fix the power steering and brakes? Otherwise I have been collecting all the scrap metal into a pile. I will stuff into the truck and sell it all off together.

The ex left the 1984 VW Vanagon on the property because it does not run and he had no place to tow it to and was too cheap to pay a tow truck anyway. The title is in his name only. To keep me from declaring it an abandoned vehicle, he told our oldest DD that he was giving it to her for a club house. I keep hoping a low flying plane with a very large magnet will take it away!

Bought some property on which the tenents had 27 vehicles of which 3 might have been road worthy.

All the big junk is gone now but it will take some time to clear all the garbage left behind.
Once the barn goes up there will be a few old vehicles {truck, tractor, backhoe} on site all of which are maintained.

Why own a tool that doesn't work?

We had one but it got towed out last summer when someone wanted the rear end out of it. I used to store a bunch of stuff in it made a pretty good shed. When my DH parked it in the back our neighbor asked if we were getting a new dog. Apparently the fellow who lived here before had several old cars parked in the same spot and he used them for dog kennels.

DH has I'm not sure how many junkers but he keeps them in other places. I think he has less than ten now, he's cleaned a few of them out.

We have one rusty old Ford pick-up that gets used for about 3 weeks every year during the Maple Sap run.

It just wouldn't be northern Illinois without an abandoned, rusting hulk of a schoolbus rotting away in some corner of the pasture.

I find that a couple of rusting junkpiles, strategically positioned, helps keep property values low and the county tax assessor honest. And our local neighborhood home owner's association says I'm not following the rules if I don't have a mean dog, a broken down automobile, a chicken coop that leans, and a pair of dirty overalls hanging on the wash line at all times.

A man ought to be in compliance with his neighborhood, don't ya think?
