Oh! Some people have all the luck! How did you get a FREE Aussie? I'm getting one on Friday, but he's costing me $100. I want a free Aussie!

We've had two Bearded Collies over the years- one was $500, the other $800. Neither were show quality, although they came from top parents. Were they worth it? Yes, to us. When we get our house done out in the boonies, we'll get another one. A quality dog from a top breeder is gonna cost money, regardless of breed. And don't think it's a money-making deal for most breeders- my mother bred champion Flat-Coated Retrievers for many years- it was more of an expensive hobby! One male from her breeding is going to Westminster this year- hope he does well.

$125 for my Great Pyr livestock guard dog, plus $80 for the spay. I never had bought a dog before that. We just rescued ours, for free.

I had at one time a free aussie too. She was one of the best dogs I have ever owned. People gave her away because they had a German Shepard that was too dominant towards her.

I guess I should say, I just sent an email confirmation to the breeder and then I bought a plane ticket from MN to MD to go pick it up. Guess I'll find out when I get there, lol.

hmm. What's the most $$$ you have ever paid for a dog?
I wouldn't pay for a pet. In 40 years I haven't yet. I've had several purebreads as well, all for free. I've had my black lab with papers, for 10 years. He was free. The dog before him was a Palmeranian, purebread, free. Free cats etc. There are so many animals out there for free, I just can't see paying for 1. They cost enough after you get them.

$500 for my GSD, and he's worth every cent.

He's almost 11. My next pup will come from the same breeder.

I paid $750 for my min pin. I'd gladly pay ten times that amount if I could bring her back. That sweet little dog brought unimaginable joy to my life.

I paid $800 for a GSD 14 years ago.

No such thing as a free dog. My pound puppy (2 year old mix) was $100 to adopt and several hundred more in vet bills. Could have brought a pure-bred puppy for that.

$375 then $150 in plane fees all the way from South Carolina. Black/white pit bull female with one glass (ice blue) eye that was considered less than perfect..less than show material even though her body and face conformation was perfect simply because of the glass eye. She was UKC/AKC registered and lived with me for 3 years before I had to sell her in order to move to the big city. She was sold to a high school senior as his graduation present only to be murdered a month later by a very paranoid neighbor who had to cough up $1000 in court fees plus fines.

I really miss that dog!

What would you do if you had paid $$$ for a dog, sight unseen (based on breeder's reputation)...and you just didn't click with it? Or it with you?

House trained easily, not mean -- just not at all a personality match. I goofed in not meeting him first -- but what do I do now? People line up to pay $$$$$ for these dogs, and they all seem to be absolutely crazy about them...

I cringe at the thought of taking him to a shelter -- but...I really wanted to have a dog that was my buddy, and DC's. Still do.

I don't take my responsibility to living things lightly -- and I know sight unseen wasn't bright. I'd been looking into getting a puppy from this breeder for about a year and a half, we were about to move hours further away from the breeder, and she said she thought this one would be "perfect" for us...and she just happened to have someone who could drive him to our home...and I goofed. It wasn't spur of the moment -- just not wise.

Oh Graciesmom- what a sad turn for you and your pup.
You didn't say what breed, but I know that a reputable breeder should always be willing to take a dog back if the placement doesn't work out. Was it a puppy when you got it? It is in my contract with the breeder that they will take the dog back if we can't keep it for any reason.

I am essentially taking my new pup sight unseen, based on the breeder's judgement. I won't even be leaving the airport- they are bringing the pup to me and I will be turning around and getting back on a plane to come home. I have considered the possibility that I won't fall in love with it on first sight, but I have a hard time imagining it. That's why they are so cute at 8 weeks- if you had to choose based on behavior, no one would ever take the little monsters, lol.

I don't know, in your case, I think if I really couldn't bond with the puppy I would cut my losses, find it a new home, and try again with a different puppy. Life is too short to waste on poor relationships, with people or animals.

I would be willing to pay up to $1500 for the right dog to show. I don't have the money right now so I am not looking. There are lots of great dogs out there that are free or very inexpensive, and money does not make the dog. But I don't think I could find a dog for showing for free or cheap unless I was co-owning with a breeder that I knew well.

For a high price tag you had better bet that I would have incredibly high standards to match. But for just being a good dog...I've got two of those. One was free and the other was $75 from the SPCA eleven years ago. And I wouldn't sell either for anything.

Wind In Her Hair -

I think she is overrun with dogs right now - and I'm not even sure if we could transport him back if she'd consider it. He was intended for service -- quite a bit more to that than I'm comfortable writing about online -- and I think she'd be losing quite a bit of face in taking him back.

He is a deliberately mixed breed. Feel free to translate that as an in-vogue cross -- aka designer dog -- but we weren't trying to be cute or trendy -- we understood the cross to have some specific traits that would be of huge benefit to our family. I'm sure it's true of *some* of the offspring/crosses -- but in this case, we can see which of the original breeds' traits came through -- and they weren't what we were led to believe, based on her "independent temperment testing". He's not doing anything but being himself, I think -- it just provides neither service or companionship for DC.

We can get by without the service aspect -- but DC is longing for the companionship, and so wants a dog that will love back.

Paid

$800.00 for a Coton De Tulear who was killed by coyotes. We were outside when he was taken; we managed to get him back but his injuries were too extensive

$125.00+$150.00 shipping for a Gr. Pyr to replace above mentioned dog;

$300.00 for English Shepherd female.

$20.00 in gas for English Shepherd neutered male who needed a home.

They have all been great dogs.
