I've known several old-timers who have sworn by WD-40 for arthritic joints.

Rub a gold wedding band over a sty and it will go away. A tablespoon of turpentine, cod liver oil and castoria (mixed) will cure ANYTHING ( at least we played like we were well). Going barefoot after May 1 will keep kids healthy. Dill pickle juice is good for nausea and to gargle for a sore throat.

Brilliant! Maybe you should have been a doctor.

Warts be gone

In my younger days in Oklahoma I had severe case of warts on one finger. Tried everything. Faithfully rubbed pennies on them for a very long time with no avail. As my grandma was straight up an Ozark hillbilly she new a cure for about anything including this. Catch a katydid and hold it to the warts. I did that and after a few minutes the bug started eating the very seeds of the warts out of my fingers. It was a bloody mess and quite painful - but it worked. Never had warts again. Who would have ever thought of something like this? She was a very unique person, the type that has settled the west and I'm proud of her. Bless her heart she is gone and with all of her knowledge.

A friend of mine makes St. John's Wort oil, and I've got to figure out the method. It cures sore muscles and joints and is good for muscle injuries. I cracked a rib a year ago, and the muscles around the injury were a tight knot for weeks, but the stiffness went away within a day once I started rubbing the oil on it. I think it's probably made by filling a jar with St. John's Wort, then filling the "full" jar with olive oil, then leaving it in the sun for a week or two.

KYHippie...we have a lot of the same home remedies (I'm in KY too). On the grease and salt for a chigger bite were you supposed to rub the salt around so it would scratch the itch? I know I did it as a kid being treated but I don't remember it I was told to or I figured it out myself. Also, on the thrush cure...a child born with a "veil" (a flap of skin over the face secured in a couple of places to the regular skin) was supposed to be able to cure it too. My mother was born with the veil and also was the seventh *child* of the seventh *child*. They ignored the son part evidently and used her from the time that she herself was just a young child to breath into the mouths of infants with the thrush.

I just talked to my friend who makes the St. John's Wort oil. He says to wait until the plant is in bloom, then moderately pack a jar with 1/3 leaves and 2/3 blossoms. Fill the jar with olive oil and let it stand two weeks. The oil will turn bright red. If you want to make it stronger, strain out the plant stuff and do it again using the same oil and fresh leaves and flowers.

The kitten jumped on the woodstove the other day, and he recommended this stuff on the burned paw too.

Apparently, the herbalists get $16/oz for this stuff, but it's pretty easy to make at home.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. from the looks of some of these cures I'd put it at 2 pounds.

Gargle with warm salt water for a sore throat.

Brew strong tea and let it cool. Put on sunburns to take the sting out. It works. I'm very fair skinned and have bbq'd myself more than once!!

For ingrown toenails that have infection.......wrap a slice of raw potato around it (or put a mound of grated potato on it). Wrap it up in gauze and leave overnight. Will draw the infection out.

Mouth ulcers........swish some hydrogen peroxide around in your mouth. DON'T SWALLOW IT!

Don't eat or drink any dairy products when you have a fever. The fever makes the dairy curdle and will make you throw up.

From my Grandmother: When I would have a ear ache she would put onion juice in my ear. She would press a slice of onion with a garlic press take the juice in a spoon and warm it over the wood stove then in my ear it went! With a cotten ball to "hold it" in. Worked every time, in the morning my ear was all better.

What other things would this be useful for?

I wouldnt call this an old remedy, but once I had a horrible sinus infection
(I never get sick) It was so bad I really thought a bullet would be a kinder way to go. so I sliced garlic cloves into hot water and let it sit for 15 minutes, then snorted it. I was like snorting lava, but 24 hours later, I felt like a new person.
