I certainly agree with the gift certificate idea. But in discussing this with your husband you might think about the utility of a large bore revolver as a carry weapon. The revolver platform gives you a lot of different options as far as loads go. Wad cutters for plinking and dispatching animals to be butchered, HPs for more serious work, shot shells for pests and snakes. Carrying a weapon with a multi-tasked range of cartridges can be very useful. I like the .45 Colt myself.

.22 is on the smaller side of the spectrum. If he wants to feel like a real man as well as having a sore hand get him one of these... or better yet, make him a real gunslinger and get two, one for each hand!

Thank you SO MUCH!!

Gift certificate -- I didn't even think of it!! And even better, just make it a blankish check, and let him go where HE wants to pick the gun out. It is such an opbvious answer -- and whoever said he woudl keep whatever i bought to be nice, is exaclty right, even if it were the totally wrong thing. Now, just to open another can of worms, for how much should the gift certificate be? We're beginning farmers so we are, by definition, not rich. That said, I don't believe in skimping on any important farm tool (and that this would be) but I don't want to be foolish either. Hubby, though a wonderful man, father, and farmer, will spend to the limit of what he is given, because he loves all of his farm tools, and not the least, the guns, so I need some guidance on how to be both not cheap and not stupid!

Now that you've rightly and properly decided on the gift certificate - I advise him to buy a nice .357 wheel gun. And one for you too.

Just my opinion of course but for a decent semi-auto pistol around 600 to 800. If he's into 1911 style pistols it's gonna be around the grand mark and go up from there. For around a grand give or take a couple of hundred he can get a good 1911. If he wants a simple .22 pistol anywhere between 350-500.

Last two handguns I purchased were a Sig Sauer P-229R .40S&W for $900 and a Sig Sauer 220 .45 for $800. Both excellent pistols for defensive or utility work. High quality with excellent resale value and they'll last for generations.

Yep, still for sale. This is probably the most accurate handgun made. My set comes in a padded aluminum brief case and includes the following barrels:
.30-30 with scope
.22 magnum
.410 gauge shotgun/.45 colt combination barrel with vented rib

PM me if interested.

my experience

let him pick his own. It needs to fit his hand well. I vote for the 22. I have a 9mm and it will shoot too far to do me much good in defending livestock in my situation - neighbor's too close. Ammo is cheap and easily had, unlike some that is getting fairly hard to get unless you reload.

Go to a local gun store and look at what the price ranges are. You know your finances better than we do .

There is nothing wrong with a used handgun, if it is a quality gun!

Locally, I have seen Smith & Wesson Sigma semi-autos in 9mm and .40 S&W going for $299.00 with a $50 dollar rebate to boot! I'm not endorsing that gun, but Smith & Wesson have made good guns in the past.

I would say that $300-500 will get him a good quality firearm new and even more of a gun used. JMHO .

You'll do well if you take him to the gun store and let him look and then make a family decision. Kinda like how some women take their boyfriends into a jewelry store to look at engagement rings .

German P-08 Luger semi-automatic pistol

There are single action (need to pull hammer back to fire), and double action (either pull hammer or trigger to fire) revolvers and single action and double action semi-automatic pistols. Also the single shot Thompson Contender which fires many calibers by switching the barrels.
Thanks RadioFish! I knew there were two basic types and a "luger" is what my old landlord (who loaded his own and we would occasionally go to the shooting range) called the semi-automatic we would take along. It may have actually been a true luger, but I don't know enough to know. Since then I've only used revolvers and a bolt action .22 so my gun use is limited.

Is there any use in getting something like a pellet gun or a twenty two which shoots inexpensive ammunition to practice with? Or is there enough difference between guns that you should only practice with the gun you intend to hunt with?

That wouldn't be bad for someone who is learning or re learning to use guns, and gun safety. Not as useful for someone who has an array of guns already and may already have a .22 (which is a handy gun to have).

If I don't want to kill my neighbors dog when he comes to the yard I shoot him in the butt with the BB gun (not lead pellets). SO they do have other uses.

Oh my goodness .... I think I have fallen in love!!!! I am in love with those nifty Contender pistols like the one Cabin Fever put the picture of on this thread!!! Me and my 11 year old have both been drooling over that picture off and on all day..... now my 14 year old and 13 year old are hanging over my shoulder wishing all sorts of lovely wishes with that gun drizzled liberally through them.

I've owned many handguns, rifles, and shotguns...will give my suggestion. A revolver is much more safe than a semi-auto.More than one experienced shooter has discharged a semiauto not realizing that there was a round in the chamber...it's not always easy to tell. You can carry a revolver with an empty chamber, so that if dropped, the hammer won't fall on a live round. NEF makes a nice .22, that holds 9 rounds. I'd recommend a .22 for anyone who has not had much in the way of handgun experience. A .22 mag would also be appropriate for a little more kick. (More expensive to shoot though). If you want to go the route of a semi-auto...I have a
WaltherPk22 that is by far the finest .22 semi-auto I've ever had the pleasure of shooting. I have owned a Ruger Mark II and a lot of people love them. I had nothing but problems with mine and I will never have another Ruger handgun. (Their rifles are sweet, though). Once you leave the .22 any other round will be significantly more costly to shoot. For plinking, or most farm uses, you really can't beat a .22 IMO. I'd agree that a gift certificate will make your man one happy camper. Good luck.

I've got a Sig Sauer P226 9mm and my grandfather's WWI Colt .45. Yum.

I've used the Sig to dispatch goats - shoot from the back of the head toward the jaw and the (soft) ground, rather than the forehead, though. I don't have a .22 for general use, but I really like those Contenders too...

Cheers!

The Taurus Judge (handgun) will fire both .410 and .45. I don't have one, but would love to get one! I like the idea of having shotgun power in a pistol when you need it. It holds 5 rounds, which can all be fired in less than 2 seconds. Brand new model and not even shown on Taurus' website.

Taurus has arguably the best warranty in the business also.
