No, I was not meaning to be snippy, I am not that kind of person. That lady was snippy to me though, but I forgive her.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention, I will work on my wording.
What I meant was this, The Borax soaks it out of the cloth and it is all liquid. The Borax is a deoderizer and disinfectant, the water does the soaking.
It may be unbelievable for some but, these wipes come out of the HOT dryer white, without any stains.

You use a dryer? Well, I guess that's forgivable since it IS winter. Though, I'm still hanging my clothes out when the rain stops.

The poll questions sure are a classic example of skew, throwing the data.
Personally, if there was just one question, do you think cloth wipes are that bad, many of us would have said no. Even if we preferred paper.
Similarly the second question, asking if we thought paper was better for you. As in how? Many of us find paper a whole lot more convenient, but not necessarily medically better for us.
Now if you simply asked which do you prefer, paper or cloth, I believe you'd have gotten a much clearer response.

Yeah, no kiddin'! Belle, if you were my daughter, I'd be flushed with pride!*ahem*
As a soil scientist, I see no problem with your alternative to TP. People stop worrying about bleach in your septic system! Whenever bleach, an oxidizer, comes into contact with organic matter...which there is plenty of in a septic tank!....it it immediately oxidizes it and becomes neutralized.
And as far as borax goes, boron is a necessary plant and animal trace nutrient. Yeah, I know a little is good, and alot can be harmful. We are not talking about alot here. Many homesteaders make there own homemade laundry detergent with borax (ie, washing soda).
In my opinion, Belle's suggestion is an equal environmental alternative to TP. Both alternatives have their own minor pros and cons. Butt, I'd say neither alternative is heads and tails better than the other.
I cannot believe how some of you like to debate over such minutia.
Belle, I am impressed by your sense of humor and your patience.

The choices don't make sense to me.
I don't use toilet paper to wash myself...I only use it for wiping the pivate bits.
Babywipes are very nice for wiping the private bits, especially after a 'number two' or during menstrual periods or when the poops are a bit runny. Toilet paper is just used as an afterthought, or for 'number one'. Or blowing noses when the hankies are in the wash and the kleenex have been misplaced.
However...we do keep packets of babywipes all over the place, as they are very practical for washing sticky fingers, bloodied noses, smelly hands, PTA showers (you'll have to PM me for that), and cheesy toes.

Washing Soda is sodium carbonate, not borax, but I'm sure you knew that

My first post and it is about wiping my butt........
Any way honestly how can anyone still use TP . Baby wipes unscented is the only way to go. After using them ...you begin to wonder just what was left behind just using TP.
For you guys using the Saw Dust toilet ....my wife makes homemade wipes out of paper towels that would break down easily in the compost pile.

Tide with bleach is a bleach ALTERNATIVE, it is not BLEACH as in chlorine bleach. Anyway, that was an older thread, I nolonger use Tide with bleach (it is not bleach, a bleach alternative!).
Oh, I think that you read my wording wrong. I wasn't snippy.

I hang up my clothes to dry in the house, in the winter. The wipes are the ONLY thing I dry in the dryer, they are just a tad scratchy when they are dryed on the line.
I have an indoor laundery line in my bathroom.

This is not really a green thread, is it?
In high school, I once cut the worn pockets out of a jacket while archery hunting to get me through an emergency. A bug was coming over me that I did not know about when I left the house. I did not keep the pockets.

So, Cabin Fever, making laundry detergent with a cup borax and 1 cup washing soda with soap and a 1/4 cup white vinegar in rinse cycle is fine for one's septic. I only use about 2-3 tablespoons of detergent per cycle. These
things seem alot nicer on my skin then store bought stuff with lots of chemicals.
Now onto the TP issue. I feel i did my part with that when i did the clothe diapers for two in them at the same time. I didn't "do a bucket" - that's what kind of grosses me about on this subject. I just "swooshed" the diaper in the toilet, got the excess off and folded it so yuckie side was in and put it in a small pail. Every other day, i had enough to do a load and no i didn't wash them with other stuff. I used the above detergent and vinegar in the rinse cycle. I did that for four years. So for now, i like the tp - especially with kids at home. I would only consider it if it were hubby and i. We have enough trouble getting the trash together from each room in the house right now.
Also, i've read up on clothe pads for women and some were grossed out by that too - that wouldn't bother me so much because it would be my business and only mine and only me to wash it.
I've also gone to peoples houses who used those wet clothes and somehow, it's just disgusting to look in the trash which always seems to be near the toilet and see those - yuck. I think anything that's been on your behind should have a lid on it.
