Yes, someone with a well can waste water. I am not though. It is strange that someone with a well could think that.Do you have a well? Are you wasting water by buying TP, that was manufactured through a process of water pollution. Not me! I never waste water.Don't take that water for granted!! We need to leave some for others.

I think I'd much rather preserve the water and compost the toilet paper into something that helps the environment.
Did you research sbout the TP that you are buying? You are NOT preserving water when you buy TP. In fact you are doing quite the opposite, wasting by polluting the water.Save the water go cloth, with no bleach, or soap.

You said, "I have well water, so how am I wasting water?"
Just stop, Belle.
Yes, I have a well. No, I'm not wasting water by buying TP. You're being extreme to the point that you're sounding like Sheryl Crow... let's all use one square to save the planet.

You are obviously parroting what you've been taught by your family/friends, so I won't argue. It's not my place to undermine your folks.

Who is Sheryl Crow? I don't know her but it sounds like she cares about the planet.
I am sorry, please forgive me. I did not mean to be arguing, I was not. I know that words typed may come across different than they are supposed to.
You said that I did not realize that I was wasting water, so I was just explaining how I preserve water.
I am sooo happy to know that you are not wasting water, neither am I. Save the water, go cloth!

lol

your using bleach, borax and soap.... those are chemicals. They pollute.
i tried to be eco friendly and use old newspaper then burn it afterwards but my butt tuned black from the ink and my woodburner chimney started smelling like a fart.

for the record I kinda like rough TP.... it scratches my itches where I fear to scratch otherwise.
ROFL!!! I just sprayed my drink all over my keyboard! :baby04: I think this is the funniest thing I've ever read..keep 'em comin', CN!!!

Great post

Years ago, a Doctor pointed out that you wouldnt use dry toilet paper if you got s**t on your hand or arm or knee.
He suggested a type of wet wipe, but nothing beats a wet soapy cloth for someone with a hairy butt.
sure, you throw it in the washing machine and wash it like a diaper

Well..I have to ask. Doesn't it require water to wash all of those rags?

I didn't say I didn't buy TP.
I said I don't waste water by buying it. The amount of water used to produce a week's worth of TP for my family is WAY LESS than the amount of water you're wasting by washing hundreds of cloths. You have to keep your comparisons relative.

I'm done here, now.
You wash, I'll wipe!

So a plant that makes millions of rolls of TP actually uses more water per person than your family does using your methods? What about all the recycled papaer that gets reused, or wood byproducts? We would have to find another use for them. Cotton prices would go throught the roof too. Cotton farmers would have to use more fertilizer and maybe even water the crops to get the yield needed to support all the fanny wipes. Clothing prices would skyrocket. Being frugal is fine... to a point.

I will cut down to one square if it will get me a hot date with Sheryl Crow!

Oh no, i don't waste water, at all. I use it with no harsh chemicals, dump it into the earth, and it is all recycled naturally!

I DON"T USE soap on these wipes, I use natural Borax, but I think I am going to switch to vinegar. I read that tip here today. We have the same amount of water on this earth that we had in the begginig.Again, I DO NOT USE BLEACH! I am using cloth wipes to get away from those chemical and to stop water polution. The making of TP it a big pollutant of water. Stop using TP and you will stop polluting our water.
The ground does not filter all pollutants out of our water. Borax may be better than bleach (although, I believe that bleach exposed to sunlight for a day is neutralized...once dumped in a septic tank, it does not get the exposure so remains toxic), borax has proven to be a problem for amphibians, fish and water plants. And if it ends up in our drinking water, perhaps it could be just as harmful to humans over time.

I don't know where you live, or how many wells are already sharing your aquafer, but many aquafers are starting to dry up, so just having a well with unlimited water now does not mean it will remain that way forever.

It sounds like you are already into ecology and water pollution..that's great. But you should be looking into the issues surrounding water conservation as well...water and air are our two most precious resources. Two things we've taken for granted far too long.

Yeah I know you are so right!!! that is why I make my personal wipes out of second-hand clothes.
See how eco-friendly it it? Use those old clothes for rags or wipes!

Thank you for that information! i have just, at this moment have decided to switch from Borax to Vinegar.
My water doesn't go into a septic, it goes out of a gray-water pipe into a 400 acre plot of land, with only two homes built on it. This land is protected by the DNR, so no more homes can be built on it.
Yes, I did know that wells do run dry. We have two wells on the property and one has been providing plenty of water for over 100 years.

You're still missing the point about water.
You don't honestly believe that every drop of water you use is reconstituted back into your well to be used by you again, do you?

Water is a precious commodity. Especially for farmers/homesteaders with only well water available to them. Most don't "spend" more than we need to because we want it to last as long as possible. Don't think for a moment that your well will be there forever. Does that make sense to you?

Wells go dry for a variety of reasons. Depth of the well doesn't guarantee how long the supply will last. Water will always follow the "path of least resistance", so a simple shift underground could make the water in your well take a different route. Drilling on someone else's property in your area can also take away your water supply.

I'm not meaning to lecture you, Belle. Just wanting you to understand that the water you use is, for the most part, gone. Sure, it's reused in the soil by plant matter, etc., but you're over-simplify the "recycle and reuse" issue.
