Ok. I know I'll probably get blasted for this but I'm a little confused.
I understand laws protecting property, animal, etc., so please clarify the difference between shooting someone's dog and someone shooting your dog for doing the same thing? Or for someone believing they did?
I have noticed for months the ongoing agreement with shooting a chicken thief. But on the other hand I have seen people posting about their pets being shot.
Maybe the woman in question just didn't realize that when she would come to the country to let her dog run that it would kill the rooster and yes it was irresponsible to allow it to run free and get away from her and kill again this time. But then I read about another posters dogs being shot and I thought, hmm, maybe someones livestock was being attacked and they saw a couple of dogs out and figured it was them and shot them? They were just defending their property, weren't they?
So I'm just trying to see both sides of the coin. I know you saw what the dog did and you took action, can't blame you. But I know I have read many a post that said if they saw dogs out they would shoot first and ask questions later.
So how do you know whats right in every situation?

I would have done the exact same thing.
Good shot, by the way.

The dogs that were shot in the other post were on their own property and were shot by someone on the road (bridge). Many laws were broken in this instance and was not related to killing livestock.

I had a pit cross that killed a cat (it was on my property but not to the point.) That dog never left my property without a muzzle for the rest of her life and was never off lead off my place. She just turned deaf when she started to go after something. I was not going to be responsible for her killing someone's pets. I had warning of her behavior and took action. There was never another decision possible. She was always very good with people but I didn't take a chance with that either. She died of a very happy old age.
That lady had more than enough warning too. It was just too inconvenient for her to do what she knew she should do. Her desires were more important to her than other's safety. Her attitude killed her dog. Period.

Let me say that I am proud of you!
You should protect your land, your family, your livelihood, and your livestock... but that's not why I am proud of you. You took an active stance - without being mean or belligerent - and told the woman - to her face - what happened and why. Many people would not have done that, in fact, I would say that most people would not have done that (either speak directly to her or state things simply, without being mean).
That's impressive.. great job!

I'm sorry that you were put in the situation to begin with.
Our dogs are always restrained, but two of them have been known to be sneaky (aside from obedience training, etc.) and take advantage of the smallest opportunity to run.
If one of my dogs were to be shot by a neighbor for attacking their livestock on their property, then "it is what it is".
I love my dogs and train them, exercise them, restrain them and do our best to keep them on our property, but our English Coonhound can't resist a romp in the wilds. We always go after her and our closest neighbors know her. She's collared, has her name tag and knows where she lives. BUT... if she were to be hit by a car or shot for attacking someone's livestock, then that's what she deserves.
Thankfully our Saint Bernard is learning to stay on our property better and better all the time.

I wish MO laws were that nice and clear - ours has some nonsense about not being able to kill the animal if it as gone back into an enclosed area. (Run home with your chickens in his mouth) Here ya gotta shoot it quick!

There's a slim chance that she learned a lesson. If she does get another dog, perhaps she'll train it.
I'll bet at least she'll find another spot in the country to exercise it.
You stood up for your rights and were as kind as you could have been under the circumstances.

Hmmm...
I've walked cautiously around this post, sniffed it carefully and sat looking at it with my head tilted to the side...
I've been away for a while...but I have to ask...
Who are you and what have you done with Oggie???
