I hope you are all saying this for fun, because with similar attitudes, you can't get much done to remedy your perceived wrongs.
From their perspective, you are probably not good neighbors either. Just like a marriage, compromises are necessary. A little chatting with them in a friendly manner will solve some of the problems. You want to do what you want to do with your land and they should be given the same opportunity.
Also, if you don't like neighbors, buy the adjoining land!
Instead of the "Do ME a favor attitude," why not meet them when they first move in and say how nice it is to have neighbors. Also tell them that some country folks have certain "ways" about them, and explain them, so they can make a choice about whether they want to fit in or not.
I'll bet if you ever had to live in a city, you'd want a little help navigating the system there.

Hey neighbor in the subdivision-built-in-a-wet area behind us, your drainage problem is NOT my drainage problem. Keep your blasted sump pump drainpipe on YOUR OWN property and stop drowning my trees! I need those trees - they prevent me from seeing your blinding "security" spotlights every night!

Dear Neighbor,
When what is now your land was recently for sale, I could have purchased it. But I didn't, you did. And I therefore have no more right to tell you what to do on your land than you have right to tell me what to do on mine.
We obviously have different interests, but I recognize that your security lights are no more intrusive on others than are my rooster, or my windmill. Your loud ATV is, at it's worst, no louder than my tractor.
You moved here becaue of the lax zoning, that enables you to build whatever and however you please. Didn't you, you sneaky devil? I know, because I did the same thing. And so I recognize that I have no moral, never mind legal, right to insist you do otherwise.
I propose we try to be good neighbors. I understand that dogs sometimes get loose. It's OK, my cattle sometime do the same. Let's just work with each other.
I promise not to listen to the advice of the promulgators of absurd revenge fantasies that populate internet message boards. I will not destroy your property, whether it be something as minor as a light bulb or as major as a beloved pet. If I do shoot your lights out, I fully expect to go to jail for endangering you and your family, and destroying your property. I would expect you to go to jail if you discharged a weapon in my direction. If I "SSS", I recognize that I am not only breaking the law, but also concealing evidence of the original crime, which is a felony.
Don't ride your ATV on my land without permission. If you do, I will prosecute you for the minor criminal offense (or even just violation) that that is. Of course, I will not engage in intentional torts and felonies like setting up boobytraps, and expect that I will somehow be excused because, "It's my land".
My animals occasionally smell, but they are an important part of my livelihood. Just as I could have bought your land, and did not, you could have purchased elsewhere. I'm sure you don't expect to move in next door to a farm and not have farming smells and sounds from time to time.
Most of all, let's both remember that life is short, and time is too valuable to spend feuding with the neighbors. I'm sure we can get along.
Welcome to the neighborhood.

When ya build that new place ,Don't put up a pole light that stays on all the time...........we like stars out here.
Pet peeve of mine.
Keep your dog fenced in will ya? I know its a half mile to the nearest neighbor , but your dogs wont mind that and my sheep do.
Pet peeve of mine.
Keep your stereo down will ya? I know its your acre and you can do what ya want but out here we hear people talking in town 3 miles away on a still night and since its only a mile to my place its like its in my bedroom.
I am GUILTY AS CHARGED of this. I like loud rock and roll in the shop.
Keep a good muffler on your ATV will ya? I know I cant talk ya out of running it up and down the road all night and I REALLY don't hate ATVs its just I hate to listen to them.
It's the pickup trucks I hate. BRAND NEW TRUCK, and they rip off the muffler to put on a glasspack. The louder, the better...especially at 2 a.m.
When ya build the new place will ya take a look around at your neighbors and see how its going to affect them,ya might wanna take a look at the sight lines so you don't poke some one in the eye with where your new place is.
Ah, well, it is their land. Can't say I like it, but it is theirs.
And my addition:
STOP BURNING YOUR DANGED TRASH when we have weekly trash pickup for just a few dollars a month. Some of us like to open the windows. Oops, sorry, that's not the new neighbors, that's the already-here folks burning that plastic next door in 3 burn barrels every other night. Mmm...love that smell!

Favor something you are under no obligation to do but that would be greatly appreciated.
KCM and Okidavid Did you notice that almost everything someone is asking for is that the neighbor keep their "thing" home?
JimS I like loud rock and roll too heck I bet Id even like it in your shop! Its just that once in a while Id like to listen to the quiet night sounds. If its in your shop its just a bit different than an outside all night rock concert every night.
Anniew what could be friendlier and kinder than "Hey neighbor ,Do me a favor"? its a request insinuating that you would be beholding to them for going beyond the call of duty. Certainly nothing highhanded and threatening.

Is there an SSS rule for these? I have one of those neighbors. For goodness sake, if you're scared of the dark, the moose, coyotes, skunks, raccoons, the bogey man and your shadow, don't move out here. I promise to never move to anyone's city and turn out the night lights. At least they could do the same for us.

That is what I always figured, they let the criminals see what you had to steal!! I always figured if there are no night lights around, I would notice a flashlight outside a whole lot more faster than the criminal using MY light to break into my shed!
Now, if only I could convince my wife that we really don't need that light on!

Not much in there I c'n argue with.
I gets along very well with all my neighbors. And, I'm the new guy.
There were Lights here, a pole light and a big one on the front of the
garage. They are still here. Well, the one on the garage burned out.
And we put up a much smaller one. Half-size was bright enough.
Many of my neighbors on the other side of the valley have big lights
& pole lights too. They are on my Neighbors' property.
At Yule time, I've taken little Homebrewed gifts, for my Neighbors.
In return we get Home-baked cookies & candies. Good deal.
Once in a while, they'll see me out working and stop to chat.
Generally they just want to let me know whats going on in the
Neighborhood.
I like where I Live. Great Neighbors, out here.
I wish everyone was so Lucky.

Well neighbor - Just remember that I am inclined to occasionally wear military issued camoflague clothing with full web gear, and wander around my densely wooded property armed with military type weapons. This may be due to the bears and mountain lions that wander through up here on the hilltop, or I may be havin' one of my Marine Corps flashbacks. At least, I am not expending large amounts of ordinance in the middle of the night at the local wildilfe when they are in my yard. They live up here also, so don't get all excited when you have a raccoon on your nice new deck trying to get into your house at 2 a.m..
So please don't wander around on my property unannounced. My parents taught me, that is not very polite behavoir - First let someone know that you are coming over to visit them. That is what telephones are for!! Not to mention the six "No Tresspassing" and "Keep Out" signs posted on the private road leading up to my locked gate are for that reason also. I have a cell phone out here, don't you? Oh, you got one of them there new fangled Apple Iphones. Okay...
Also, I tend to play my rock and roll loud at times. I do keep the house windows closed, and I turn it down after 10 p.m., even though I am on 80 acres. I realize you may not like listening to my choice of AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, or even Alice Cooper late at night. The local deer seem to enjoy my selection loud rock and roll by coming right up to the house, but the bears and mountain lions may enjoy that classical music that you play really loud at night. I think mountain lions really enjoy Opera, when the "Fat Lady Sings!!" Haven't you ever heard the sound made, when a mountain lion howling sounds just like a woman screaming??? No? (shaking my head, smiling) Oh, you will - you will... Just don't get too scared, when you do hear it right outside your house!!!
Welcome to the neighborhood, so to speak...

No, Sorry! I did not notice! Your claim must be hiding somewhere!!
Do you think you could show us where 'almost everything' is as you claim?
What I did see was that your original post talked mostly about the sights and sounds from your neighbor's property.
Do you realize that when you adamantly demand that your new neighbor's keep their sights and their sounds on their side of the property line, you are likewise suggesting that you will also keep your own sights and your own sounds on your own side of the property line?
In effect, you are likewise claiming that all farming 'effects' should never cross over the property line (including all animal smells and animal sounds).
What have you got against farming operations?

i have one of those night lights in my yard that stays on during the night -- why you ask? I live on a gravel road by the church and a cemetery, very few other people live on this stretch of road that is a pass thru between to paved roads on the way to the interstate. when the light is out - you can't see the hills and turns on the road as you are driving it - its a safety light.
I can still see the stars, and when the lights are out in the house - its completely dark inside. the animals don't mind it - its dark in the hen house and the rabbit barn and we don't have a coon or coyote problem, usually...
so whats the problem?

For you there doesn't seem to be a problem, sounds like the light is working as it should and has no effect on your neighbors.
My neighbors move in and the first thing that goes up is one of those all night insecurity lights to light up the empty side of there property...now I wouldn't mind the light if it were properly mounted or maybe put on the other side of there property but it's not. It's mounted on the side of there utility shed about 8 feet high. The utility shed is at the back of there property which is lower than my property making the light about eye level from my back yard.
About 200 yards away from my back yard

I walk out of my back door, I'm blinded by the light and have stumbled down the steps several times.....after they first put it up I went over and asked about shielding it or changing it over to a motion light but was pretty much laughed at...I don't think they are bad people....just like having things there way so I'll deal with it until I can find a solution.

How can you get "when you adamantly demand " out of that?
as for
"No, Sorry! I did not notice! Your claim must be hiding somewhere!!
Do you think you could show us where 'almost everything' is as you claim?"
I dont think its hid at all and Id be glad to show you the proof .Just reread all the posts before this one.
Just outa curiosity why do you want to take a thread about nicely asking your neighbors to do you a favor and turn it into some sorta battle of rights?
You know quite often when folks move out into the country they are doing it for the first time in their lives and dont know how things will affect their neighbors or themselves.
Take the security light issue for instance my GF and her kids from Chicago had no idea how many stars are in the night sky they live within the city glow and a security light doesnt really decrease the number of stars they can see.
They were totally stunned buy the thousands they can see from my farm(yes Im a farmer). and it was a great learning experiance for them and me to turn on the yard light and see what that one light did to the stars. Of course that led to a series of turning it on and off and going farther and farther away to see the effect.BTW I learned that night that my one light has a noticeable affect over a mile away!
I didnt mean this thread to be about any sort of demands, just a friendly enlightening of others as to some of the things we value.
