Look at the unvented gas heaters, either wall mount or free standing. They don't need a chimney or stove pipe, are thermostatically controlled, and will be cheaper to operate than the electric units. They heat a considerable area, also, depending on the unit you purchase.

Melissa, I would definitely recommend against it. I just bought two of them three days ago, 110 volt, 1500 watts, 5000 BTUs. Mine said each one was only good for heating 400 square feet. They're not even heating 200 square feet at 40+ temperatures! I'm taking them back for a refund tomorrow. HTH

I use one in my basement shop to knock off the chill, It stays 6 to 8 degrees cooler than the upstairs( on purpose).
It raises the 900 sq ft room the needed 5 or so degrees nicely but I would hate to try and use it as a sole heat soarce.
