$4000 a month is chicken scratch compared to some people selling ad's
1: Markus Frind: PlentyOfFish.com - $300,000 per month
Markus Frind is a local Vancouverite who is turning the online dating world upside down. His site, Plentyoffish.com is the biggest free dating site on the Internet. Plentyoffish.com receives up to 500 million page views per month and make over $10,000 per day for Markus, who runs the site from home.
2: Kevin Rose: Digg.com - $250,000 per month
3: Jeremy Schoemaker - $140,000 per month
yeh, thats a $132,000 check from google ad's
People manipulate the system so page clicks count for ad clicks, popups, etc etc ..figure alot of noobs click ad's until they figure out they system, it all ad's up. I made a whopping $65 from google ad's on my site

I do know that the only money this site gets is from the google ads at the top of the page...and you have to actually click on them for HT to get any kind of credit.
I almost never click on them.....I seem to forget they are there or I'm too busy reading here.

Wow. Hope you just had a bad day. Never saw this topic come up before, & wow. Don't you want people to be curious? Jeez. What an off-the-handle reaction. Me, I don't _care_ at all what anyone makes off of a web site, but I sure am _curious_ what they make & how it all works. I hope he makes enough to cover expenses plus some, and I don't _care_ if he makes a million bucks a year profit. Good for him.
I just want to be _curious_ about it, ok? Chill a little.
Wow.
Anyhow, to the thread of the message, how does a Blog work anyhow? I find them all very dull & boring & drivel, as others say. They tend to be the writings of one person. Who cares???
Forums like this are interesting, you can find some variaty. (Man, I wish I could spell..... Sigh.)
What is the appeal of blogs, or are they different than what I am thinking of? I see more & more blog hits when I do a google search for something, and I am almost always disappointed in the results from blog links..... What am I missing?

I am going to come out of lurk mode and reply here... I've been making a good living online since 98 with websites and affiliate programs, as well as google adsense.. What may seem ordinary or utterly boring to you is fascinating to other people, we sometimes forget the internet is worldwide and many different points of view..
People are always innately curious to see how others live, it's a normal human fascination.. Blogs are just the new websites of today, it's a peek into people's private lives for all to see, just like an online diary..
You can remain totally anonymous on a website or blog, or let people know who you are, you can have an alter ego or be yourself...
The internet is still like the wild west, almost anything goes...

I didn't mind r h commenting, or asking about what Chuck made off this site. I took the question to be, "gee, wonder how someone I know is doing, in a similar venue?"
I did not interpret it to be negative or nosy, just a neighborly kind of thing like you'd comment to your friends and neighbors about another friend or neighbor. Much like, "wonder how much Joe Blow made on his wheat this year."
But, I also realize that reading something in print doesn't always translate the same to everyone...but this group seems to be rather "neighborly" and pretty open and willing to share just about everything about anything.

I read quite a lot of blogs, including the one mentioned here. Some people have a flair for writing and I find their lives interesting. I think it's the same as a forumn, except you get "the rest of the story" so to speak. Plus, a lot of blogs have open comments so that you can read the authors point of view then read thru all the comments and add your own - sounds kinda like a forumn huh?

The topic of Chuck getting rich comes up regularly. I hope he becomes a MILLIONAIRE for all the support I garner from my friends here.
I really do. HOWEVER. I know that he's not - nor will he be from us po' folks...
And that site about the woman on the cattle ranch?
Nauseating. Well done? But nauseating sez Miss Haversham...
It's annoying to read a Harlequin Romance novel when I'm living a Weekly World News life...

I dont get all the negativity here.
I would like to know what Chuck makes also. No big deal its just interesting.
And the OP did not seem in any way to be negative about it gust a simple coment. Nice for conversation.
As for the mom, GOOD for her. How can one be so negative there? Some of you same people complain when a mother is on welfare and when a large family does anything. So she is creative and takes care of her own. GREAT if you dont like it leave well enough alone. It does not concern you. You just sound jealous to me.

Gee Tracy, you got a soar thumb? I'll send you a get well card, Okay!
No, I don't really want to know the actual dollar amount chuck makes on this website. Nor do I want to know the dollar amount that anyone else makes. no matter how they make it. It was just a pondering comment.
I knew you could make money off the advertisements of your website if you have one. But up till I seen this news story I had no ideal they paid that good. Nor did I know that people had to actually click on the advertisements before it paid anything. I guess that's the answer to anyone here that wants a stay at home job. Develope yourself a great website that will capture everyone's attention and keep them clicking on the advertisements.
Now that I know how it all works maybe I'll help our good buddy Chuck out and try to click on a few advertisements per week so he can reap some extra money. And, see what I can do to develope my own website.
Tracey, when I get my website up and going I'll let you come over and push my ad button.

I'm not jealous. I'm the most UN-jealous person ever.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE it when someone wins the lottery, etc. It shows there is hope somewhere...
And my life is fine? Just a little too challenging most of the time.
I'm just a realist...
and resigned...

Here is my question:
If you all love this site as much as I do, and by simply clicking on the ads, not actually buying something, couldn't we make Chuck a ton of money just by clicking? That seems a bit simple, I would assume that there has to be a sale made somewhere to profit much. Advertising is paid for by companies so they SELL things, not just so people look at it. I just want to know how the system works. I don't care what it pays, just how the system works. Maybe someone would like to see how our life works, I write sometimes and wouldn't mind people looking at it, I just don't see the point in hosting a site if it just costs me time and money.

Folks, I helped start two other "lifestyle" sites that are similarly addicting and "sticky" for users. The first one was a partnership between two guys, who then later sold it to another owner. They posted ads they sold themselves, and did real well at it. It was a wild thing, cuz they never had actually met...one lives in Montana and one in Illinois.
The second one started off nonprofit, but the guy found out pretty quick it takes a lot of cash for space and accessability. So he turned some money by endorsement pages, where he'd feature products (books, mostly) being produced by the site's members. It was taken by members as support of their work, and got him some cash.
Neither of the sites was a cash cow, but they did turn some money for the owners, which is fair considering the time and effort they put in. The partners made a pretty good buck when they sold their site.
I'd like to compliment Chuck and HT. This site is really accessible, works well even on dialup, works well with older OS like Win98. I pop in here through a variety of puters in a variety of circumstances. It's really quite well done.

Clicking on the ads isn't going to make anybody rich. I think you make a few (very few) cents per click.
The money comes in with "Affillate Programs" where you sign up with companies, ie. Amazon.com and place a link on your blog/website to to that company (they provide you with the url link). Anyone who buys anything using that link makes you a commission on that sale.
That 4K mom has many links on her blog, plus with all the hoopla in the media about her, she has traffic (tons). If that traffic buys anything from her links, she's making money. And now you know why she's all over the web promoting her blog.
Google affilliate programs, you can get all the info you need.
Here's just one site that lists companies that offer webmasters affilliate programs.

I remember when the site NEEDED money..I donated to the cause, so did others, both current and former members. Maybe I own .00002 percent of a period at the end of one of the sentences here..lol...who cares? I'll take that sword yielding smilie riding the hobby horse instead - lol..
No need to get one's knickers in a twist because someone has curiousity and asks a simple question out loud..heck I've wondered if the site is making enough from the ads to keep Chuck from having to dig into his own pocket to keep it going.
Chuck and Dean make it possible for the site to remain in existance. I remember the times when there were problems with servers, problems with other things and many times the whole site would be "down" while Chuck and Dean fixed things and got everything back up and running. (and while they maintained some sort of normal work and home life too). I don't know if either of them get a salary and frankly that is none of my business as well.
I enjoy coming here like I have since the Lusenet days - ok, I enjoy coming here more than I did when it was on the Lusenet site/system..cause that was a royal pain for people trying to keep things running. I don't remember clearly but is seemed that there was hardware issues with that old site being on servers? Chuck and Dean would remember better than I, who would scream "where is the forum!!!!" when I would DIAL UP and wait and wait and see the "page temporarily unavailable" come up.
Chuck, if you need a "snappy" comeback to the age old "what do you make" question, you can use mine. " less than I would like" seems to cover it pretty well.
